Laos publishes a narrower visa menu than the forums suggest
Laos long-stay visas and residence
Laos publishes a limited set of bases: tourism and extensions, a business visa with an NIB, work with a permit, and family. There is no dedicated retirement visa in the verified set; a genuine long stay needs a real status.
Where to start
Laos is not a menu-driven immigration market. A person looking for a long stay cannot simply pick a “retirement”, “remote work” or “five-year lifestyle” visa from a broad catalogue, because the public system offers far fewer purpose-built options than several neighbouring countries.
The first question is therefore not your lifestyle label. It is your legal basis. A genuine tourist has a tourist route. A qualifying investor has an investment/business route. A foreign employee needs the employment chain, including the appropriate visa, work permit and stay permission. Family status depends on the status of the principal applicant. As of 7 August 2026, the official public list of Lao visa categories does not show a dedicated retirement visa or a digital-nomad visa.
That narrowness is useful to understand early. A tourist visa can be sensible for a short stay or a scouting trip. It is a weak foundation for a multi-year relocation plan. Equally, “I work online” does not create a special immigration category: the official Lao eVisa terms state that visitors using the tourist eVisa may not engage in paid or unpaid work.
For anyone planning to make Laos a real base, the task is to match the actual activity to a defensible status and check the full sequence — sponsor, visa, stay permit, work permit where relevant and renewals. This guide explains that structure; it is not individual legal advice and does not promise approval.
The category map
For most international residents, the useful map is compact:
• Tourist T-B3 / eVisa — for tourism and temporary stays. The official eVisa permits up to 30 days. Extensions exist, but they should not be confused with a residence programme. • Investor/business route — the current Investment Promotion and Management Committee page uses NI-B2 for foreign investors and describes related stay-permit and multiple-entry procedures. The same official page also contains an I-B2 reference, so the exact code should be reconfirmed at filing. • Foreign employee route — LA-B2 together with a work permit and stay permit. The employer, employment contract and foreign-labour approvals are central. • Family route — derivative status where the principal applicant’s category allows it. The public investment service expressly includes qualifying investors’ family members. • Student ST-B2 — an official category, but the public category page does not provide enough detail to treat it as a generic long-stay workaround.
The official list also contains long-term I-B3 and permanent P-B3 labels. What it does not provide on that page is a clear, open programme that an ordinary retiree, remote worker or long-stay tourist can simply elect into. We therefore do not present those labels as off-the-shelf expat products.
In Laos, the underlying relationship — tourism, investment, employment, study or family — matters more than the acronym.
Visas compared
| Type | Who it's for | Max stay | Renewable | Work | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tourist eVisa / T-B3 | Tourists and people spending a limited period in Laos without working | eVisa: up to 30 days per entry. Checked 07.08.2026; confirm for your passport and issuance route before travel. | Extensions are available through Immigration, but the exact ceiling and number of extensions should be confirmed before filing. | No. The official eVisa terms prohibit paid and unpaid work. | Nationality-dependent and calculated by the official eVisa portal; bank charges are additional. Recheck on the application date. |
| Investor/business NI-B2 (I-B2 also appears on the official page) | Qualifying foreign investors, shareholders and certain officers of a registered Lao business | OSS describes 3-, 6- and 12-month multiple-entry periods; certain qualifying concession investors may receive 3–5-year treatment. Checked 07.08.2026; confirm with OSS. | Ordinary investment cases are described as renewable year by year while the basis remains valid; concession-linked cases follow their own terms. | Do not treat it as automatic permission for employment. Work-permit requirements depend on the actual role. | No single reliable 2026 public total was confirmed; verify current charges with OSS/consulate before filing. |
| Foreign employee / LA-B2 + work permit + stay permit | Foreign nationals with a genuine employment contract from a lawfully established Lao employer | Official formality records describe 3, 6 or 12 months depending on the employment contract. Checked 07.08.2026; reconfirm with the employer and authorities. | Possible while the employment basis and linked permissions continue, subject to approval; not automatic. | Yes, within the approved employment and with the required work/stay permissions. | The Lao Trade Portal contains historic fee schedules, but they are not treated as current 2026 pricing; confirm with the employer and authorities. |
| Family of a principal applicant | Family members of a qualifying principal applicant where the underlying category allows derivative status | Usually tied to the principal applicant’s status; no single public maximum covers all cases. Checked 07.08.2026; confirm case by case. | Generally dependent on the principal status remaining valid and the family relationship being documented. | Do not assume family status itself authorises employment; work rights require separate confirmation. | Procedure-dependent; no universal public amount was confirmed in the official sources reviewed. |
| Student ST-B2 | Foreign nationals with a genuine study basis at an appropriate institution | ST-B2 appears in the official category list, but the public page does not state a universal maximum stay. Checked 07.08.2026; confirm through the institution and consulate. | Depends on continuing enrolment/study and competent-authority approval. | Do not assume student status automatically permits employment. | No universal public fee was confirmed in the official sources reviewed; verify before filing. |
Which route fits you
The tourist eVisa does not automatically cover remote work and expressly prohibits paid/unpaid work. Get case-specific advice if you intend to work while physically in Laos.
Without another genuine basis — family, investment, employment, study or another confirmed category — Laos does not offer a mainstream retirement programme.
Requires a genuine approved investment/corporate relationship and company documents; confirm the exact code and term with OSS.
The correct route depends on the real corporate role. The official investment page separately flags work-permit requirements for some non-shareholding directors.
The clearest public example is the family of a qualifying investor; documents and duration should be confirmed for the actual sponsor.
The category exists officially, but the institution/consulate should confirm the current process, duration and documents.
Useful for temporary stays, not a residence substitute. Confirm the extension ceiling with the Department of Immigration.
Tourist entry and extensions
The tourist route works when the purpose is genuinely temporary: travel, a scouting trip, a seasonal stay or time to decide whether Laos fits your day-to-day life. The official Lao eVisa is Tourist Visa T-B3. It allows up to 30 days from entry. The approval letter is valid for up to 60 days after issue, which is the window to use it for entry — not a 60-day permission to remain. For eVisa, the passport must be an ordinary passport with at least six months’ validity remaining at arrival.
Extensions are possible, but public wording should be handled carefully. The current Department of Immigration visa page says that a 30-day tourist status can be extended, and its extension service instructs applicants to file before expiry. Public statements are not perfectly uniform across every issuance channel, so the exact extension length, number of extensions and current fee should be confirmed with Immigration before relying on them.
A tourist extension buys time; it does not convert tourism into residence. Back-to-back extensions or border trips should not be modelled as a guaranteed annual plan.
Remote workers need an additional check. The official eVisa terms explicitly prohibit both paid and unpaid work. There is no separate nomad visa in the official public category list. If you intend to perform work while physically in Laos, obtain case-specific advice rather than assuming that a tourist stamp covers online work.
Business visa and NIB
For a person who genuinely invests in Laos, the business route is built around the investment and the registered Lao entity. It is not a long-stay product detached from commercial substance.
The current Investment Promotion and Management Committee material uses NI-B2 for foreign investors and covers investors, shareholders and certain company officers. The procedure can involve an investment or concession licence, enterprise registration, tax registration, the company’s request and passport documents, with the One-Stop Service coordinating parts of the process.
The same official source describes multiple-entry periods of 3, 6 and 12 months. For ordinary investors without a qualifying long-term government concession, the public guidance describes the usual pattern as no more than one year at a time, renewable year by year if the legal basis continues. Certain investors holding government concession agreements of at least 10 years may qualify for 3–5-year stay-permit and multiple-entry treatment. That is a special concession-linked privilege, not a general five-year business visa.
Search results and older discussions often shorten the label to NI-B. The current official page uses NI-B2 and also contains an I-B2 reference. Confirm the precise code with the One-Stop Service or consulate before filing.
Owning a foreign company, receiving overseas income or incorporating a Lao entity purely to create a visa story does not by itself prove eligibility. The investment or corporate relationship has to be real and documentable.
Work and permits
Employment in Laos is a linked process, not a single visa sticker. Official sources describe LA-B2 for the foreign employee together with a work permit and a stay permit. The sponsoring entity must be lawfully established in Laos and operate within the rules for foreign-labour quotas. The employee needs an employment contract, while different parts of the process involve labour authorities, immigration/public security and foreign-affairs/consular functions.
That is why “I have a business visa, so I can work” is too broad. The official LA-B2 formality expressly ties the employment route to the visa, work permit and stay permission. The work-permit formality also refers to the employer’s approved foreign-labour quota, worker list, passport copy, photographs and health certification.
The Lao Trade Portal records 3-, 6- or 12-month validity patterns depending on the employment contract. These records are useful for understanding the structure, but some underlying formality sheets were last modified years ago and include old fee references. We therefore do not reproduce those historical charges as 2026 prices. The employer should reconfirm current fees, forms and requirements before submission.
Retirement: how it works
There is no dedicated retirement visa in the public official Lao visa-category list checked on 7 August 2026. That makes Laos different from destinations where age plus pension income unlocks a specific retirement programme.
A retiree may stay under another lawful category if the facts genuinely fit it — for example, tourism for a limited period, derivative family status, a qualifying investment route or another recognised basis. But “retired” is not itself the immigration basis.
This matters before making long commitments. Signing a multi-year lease, moving household goods and then assuming tourist extensions will solve the residence issue reverses the sensible order. If Laos is meant to be a genuine home base, establish the durable legal basis first.
If an intermediary markets a standard “official Laos retirement visa”, ask for the current visa code, eligibility rule, competent issuing authority and legal basis. In the official category list we checked, no dedicated retirement category is shown.
Family and other bases
Family options are derivative and case-specific. The clearest public example is the family of a qualifying foreign investor: the Investment Promotion and Management Committee expressly includes investors’ family members in the NI-B2/stay-permit process.
That does not mean every family relationship produces the same status or duration. The principal applicant must first have a valid basis, and the family member must document the relationship as required by the competent authority.
The official category list also contains student ST-B2, expert E-B2, long-term I-B3, permanent P-B3 and other specialised labels. A category name is not the same thing as an open programme. Where the public authority page does not state who qualifies and how an ordinary applicant can access the status, eligibility should be treated as unconfirmed until the relevant authority or a qualified local adviser confirms it.
A useful rule is to work from the underlying relationship: enrolled student, actual employee, genuine investor or qualifying family member. Then determine the visa and permit sequence.
Laos in the regional picture
Many people evaluate Laos as one component of a wider mainland Southeast Asia lifestyle rather than as their only country for the next decade. That can be practical: Laos sits beside Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Myanmar, and regional travel can be straightforward. Immigration compliance, however, remains country-specific.
A sensible regional plan gives each country its own lawful purpose. You may be a tourist in Laos for one period and hold a separate long-stay status elsewhere. Or you may have a genuine Lao employment or investment basis and use neighbouring countries for travel. What should not be assumed is that leaving and returning automatically resets a right to live in Laos indefinitely.
Border travel is logistics, not a substitute for status. Re-entry remains an immigration decision. We do not recommend border runs as a residence strategy or a way to bypass the purpose of a visa.
If your priority is a reliable base for remote work or retirement, compare Laos with neighbouring countries on immigration durability, not just rent levels or lifestyle. The cross-country questions belong in separate regional guides.
Step by step
A workable long-stay plan starts with the legal basis, not the visa code.
1. Define the real activity: tourism, employment, investment, study or family residence. 2. Check nationality and travel-document requirements. For eVisa, the official portal requires an ordinary passport with at least six months’ validity at arrival. 3. Identify the sponsor or institutional relationship. NI-B2 depends on a genuine investment/corporate basis. LA-B2 depends on a Lao employer, employment contract and foreign-labour approvals. 4. Prepare pre-entry approvals where required. Business and employment cases may involve requests initiated by the Lao company or One-Stop Service. 5. Separate the documents conceptually. A visa, work permit and stay permit are not interchangeable. 6. Track the authorised stay, not just the approval’s validity. A 60-day eVisa approval-letter validity does not create a 60-day stay; the eVisa stay is 30 days. 7. Start extensions before expiry. The current Immigration extension service instructs applicants to apply before the authorised period ends and references filing three days before expiry. 8. Reconfirm fees before paying. Some official Trade Portal work-formality sheets contain legacy fee schedules and should not be treated as live 2026 pricing. 9. For a multi-year relocation, ask a local professional to map the whole 12–24-month sequence: basis, sponsor, visa, permits, renewals and points where continuity could fail.
How NovAsia helps
NovAsia’s role is not to turn Laos’s limited immigration toolkit into a catalogue of invented products. We first test whether the client has a real basis for a longer stay, then coordinate a vetted local specialist where the public rules are incomplete or the case is document-heavy. We can also align immigration reality with practical decisions such as where to rent, how long to commit to a lease and whether a regional plan makes more sense.
Our quality standard is to distinguish an official rule from local practice and a current rule from an old formality sheet. Where the public evidence is not strong enough, we say so rather than filling the gap with a promise.
NovAsia is not a substitute for a Lao lawyer, licensed immigration professional or competent government authority, and we cannot guarantee issuance, renewal or entry. The useful next step is to determine whether Laos is realistically suitable as your long-term base and which local specialist should handle the route.

Expert view

I would not try to manufacture a broader Laos visa menu than the country actually publishes. Our job is to separate genuine bases — tourism, investment, employment and family — from attractive labels, then bring in a qualified local professional when the public rules are not enough for a safe conclusion. That is a platform and quality-control approach, not individual legal or immigration advice.
