Overstaying a Visa or KITAS in Bali: What to Do Next

When Does a Stay in Bali Become an Overstay?

A visa can still look valid on your phone even though your permitted stay in Indonesia has ended. The crucial date is the expiry of your current izin tinggal, or permission to stay. Once you remain beyond that date, an overstay issue arises. The date printed as the visa's last day for entry answers a different question.

Think of an electronic visa as permission to travel to Indonesia within a specified window. The stay permission that applies after admission sets the period you can actually remain. A long entry-validity window does not create a longer holiday, and an unused new visa does not quietly renew the stay you are already on.

Bali has no separate overstay law. The national immigration rules apply whether you are staying in a guesthouse in Kuta, a family home near Ubud or elsewhere in the country. Your location matters later, when you identify the Immigration Office responsible for your address.

One extra night can be consequential. Moving a departure flight, paying for an extension application or receiving reassurance from a visa agent does not by itself establish that your stay has been extended. When the dates do not line up, the current permit record and the official application outcome are the starting points.

How to Find the Actual Date Your Stay Permission Ends

An old e-VOA PDF, a payment receipt and a newer email from eVisa may all be sitting in the same folder. Only one of them may show the date that currently controls your stay. Start with the most recent approved permission and work backwards through the application history if something does not match. A passport's own expiry date is unrelated to how long Immigration has permitted you to remain.

For a visitor, the relevant record may be the entry-linked stay permission followed by any approved extension. For a resident, look at the actual ITAS document, commonly called KITAS, and the sponsor's processing records. The sponsor may have access to an application status you cannot see, but a casual message saying the paperwork has been sent is not evidence of approval.

There are separate events in the process: a visa was issued; it was used to enter Indonesia; an extension was submitted; a fee was paid; an extension was approved. They can occur on different dates. A receipt proves a payment took place, not that Immigration issued a new end date. If an on-time application is still pending, ask the responsible office how that pending status affects your permission instead of assuming that the application automatically protects you from overstay consequences.

Late-night departures expose date mistakes. Someone whose permit ends on 12 November might have a booking for 00:20 on 13 November. Airport check-in may open the previous evening, but the immigration-exit record is a separate event. Only Immigration can confirm how the particular departure is assessed; a flight itinerary is not an extension of stay.

Where records disagree, keep both versions. Save the application reference, the timestamped status screen, the latest permit and the relevant passport pages. Those details are far more useful to an immigration officer than a summary from an intermediary that simply says everything is in order.

What to Do First If You Have Overstayed in Bali

Leaving the problem for the departure desk is a gamble. Immigration may need to resolve more than a simple payment: the original permission could be non-extendable, a sponsor may be involved, or an extension application may have no final decision. Waiting for a booked flight does not settle any of those questions.

The useful first account of the problem is short and factual. Identify the stay-permit category, its confirmed end date, any submission or payment record and your intended travel date. If you have ITAS, identify the sponsor and what has actually been filed. A preliminary count of overdue days helps frame the question, but it is not an official assessment of the amount owed.

While you are living in Bali, the normal first contact is the Immigration Office responsible for your address. Ask what procedure applies to your current status, whether personal attendance is required and which official payment instructions to use. A sponsored resident should involve the sponsor immediately; a tourist should not accept an agent's promise that an ordinary fine will make further residence lawful.

An upcoming flight adds another decision. Contact the official Ngurah Rai immigration channel ahead of departure to find out whether airport settlement is possible for this case and what documents and payment arrangement are accepted. Complex cases should not be left until airline check-in. Give accurate dates and keep records of what Immigration tells you, even when the answer is less convenient than an intermediary's reassurance.

Indonesia Overstay Charges and the Risk of Deportation

Indonesia Immigration publishes a charge of IDR 1,000,000 per overdue day, beginning with day one. In its explanation dated 22 September 2025, the Surakarta Immigration Office describes the daily-charge period as days 1 through 59. Three overdue days would therefore produce an illustrative IDR 3,000,000 calculation. The officer handling your case determines the official assessment and payment route.

That charge is a consequence of staying too long, not an optional price for extra days. A traveller who has already used the available Visa on Arrival extension cannot buy another week by budgeting seven days of penalties. Where a permit remains eligible for renewal, a separate immigration decision is still needed. Where it cannot be extended, paying a charge does not grant permission to keep living in Indonesia.

Article 78 of Immigration Law No. 6 of 2011 also addresses enforcement. Under subsection (2), failure to pay the charge arising from a shorter overstay can result in deportation and an entry ban, known as penangkalan. This is not hypothetical: Denpasar's immigration detention office reported an August 2026 case involving 34 overdue days and inability to settle the charge, followed by deportation.

The precise 60-day boundary deserves special care. Surakarta's public guidance treats 60 days and beyond as the threshold for deportation and an entry ban. The Indonesian-language text of Article 78, however, uses “less than 60 days” in subsection (1) and “more than 60 days” in subsection (3). The different formulations do not justify assuming that exactly day 60 is a safe exception. Seek case-specific instructions immediately, especially if your day count is close to that threshold.

As of 18 October 2026, the published rules provide a framework, not a ruling on anyone's particular case. Indonesian Immigration must assess the permit and the events that led to the overstay; seek qualified legal help if enforcement is possible.

Why an Expired VoA, Visit Permit or KITAS Needs a Different Response

Two people with the same number of overdue days may face different administrative steps because their underlying permissions are different. The fine does not tell you whether renewal is still possible, whether a sponsor has to act or whether the residence status needs to be formally closed. Advice from another traveller is useful only after the permit types have been compared.

For Visa on Arrival and e-VOA holders, the immediate question is whether the available extension was already used. Ngurah Rai Immigration publishes an eVisa-based extension process. That does not establish that a fresh extension can be granted after the permitted stay has lapsed. Someone who has exhausted the permitted extension needs an official resolution, not a payment plan for more time on the island.

C1 and other visit-stay permissions, known as ITK, are governed by their precise index and extension history. An agent might describe several unlike products as a “long tourist visa”. That label cannot show whether a particular stay is still extendable. The issued permit, previous approvals and current application status are the evidence that matters.

The stakes change for a person holding ITAS, often referred to as KITAS. The permission is tied to a defined basis and may involve a sponsor who manages applications through eVisa. A sponsor's assurance that the paperwork is underway does not answer whether a new permission has been issued. If the resident is also ending the underlying arrangement or leaving Indonesia, separate status-closure or exit formalities may apply. Immigration and the sponsor need to coordinate the actual path.

Be wary of a promised backdated visa switch. Changing status, where available, is its own regulated process. It should never be presented as a guaranteed way to erase a period in which the person lacked valid permission to stay.

Which Immigration Office to Contact in Bali—and When to Ask the Airport

The right office is not necessarily the Immigration Office with the shortest drive from your villa. Residents of Canggu, Kuta, Denpasar, Ubud and the north or east of Bali should establish which Kantor Imigrasi currently handles their registered address and permit. Different immigration units have different territorial responsibilities; a map pin alone cannot tell you who is authorised to decide your case.

Ngurah Rai Immigration publishes an office address in Jimbaran and two general contact channels: kanim_ngurahrai@imigrasi.go.id and chat-only WhatsApp +62 812-3695-6667. These details were checked against the official site on 18 October 2026 and should be reconfirmed when used. They are enquiry channels, not a personal case officer's number or a guarantee that the Ngurah Rai office has jurisdiction over every Bali resident. A concise message should give your area of residence, permit type, expiry date, pending application details and departure plan.

Ngurah Rai Airport's exit checkpoint is a separate setting. The UK government's country-specific guidance describes payment for some shorter overstays at departure, including a cash requirement stated for that process. It is useful background for British passport holders, but not a blanket promise about airport settlement for every nationality, ITAS case or unresolved application. Indonesian Immigration decides what applies.

Before an international flight, find out whether the case can be handled at departure, which payment method will actually be accepted, what evidence to carry and how much airport time to allow. Where a permit has expired long ago, an ITAS sponsorship needs closing, or funds are unavailable, the responsible office should be contacted in advance. An airline booking is not an immigration appointment.

Illness, Cancelled Flights or an Unpaid Charge: Evidence That Matters

A disrupted flight or a hospital stay can explain how an overstay happened. Neither event guarantees that the charge will disappear. Immigration needs evidence tied to dates: a hospital admission and discharge record, for example, or an airline notice showing the cancelled flight and its booking reference. Keep the original itinerary as well as the replacement arrangement so the sequence is clear.

An eVisa malfunction calls for a different paper trail. Application references, error screenshots with dates, receipts and support messages may help establish what was submitted and when. The legal effect of an application still awaiting a decision cannot be inferred from a screenshot alone. An officer has to assess the processing history and the permit involved.

There has been targeted emergency relief in Bali. On 2 March 2026, Ngurah Rai Immigration announced an emergency stay-permission measure and a zero-rupiah overstay policy for passengers affected by Middle East airspace closures. The announcement identified the particular disruption and documentary requirements, including cancellation evidence from the airline. It was not a permanent waiver for every missed connection or weather delay, and it should not be treated as one.

An inability to pay needs immediate attention too. In an August 2026 report, Denpasar's immigration detention office described a deportation after a 34-day overstay where the person could not pay the charge. The account also referred to medical treatment, illustrating why an explanation and an exemption are not the same thing. Contact Immigration promptly, and seek help from your consulate and a qualified immigration lawyer if detention or deportation is a possibility.

Warning Signs of an Unsafe Overstay “Fix”

“We can delete the overstay from the system”

How it works

An intermediary seeks a transfer to alter an immigration record without an official decision.

Red flag

No competent authority, case reference or official receipt is identified.

What to do

Verify the procedure with Immigration and use only confirmed official payment channels.

“The daily fine lets you keep living here”

How it works

A penalty is sold as though it were a lawful extension of stay.

Red flag

Nobody can produce a new stay-permit document with an approved expiry date.

What to do

Ask Immigration whether this specific permit can still be extended.

“We can backdate a new visa or KITAS”

How it works

The promise bypasses a missed deadline and sponsor procedures.

Red flag

A guaranteed result without reviewing the permit index and actual status.

What to do

Do not hand over your passport to an unverified agent; check any status change with Immigration.

“Show up just before boarding; it takes five minutes”

How it works

The advice ignores overstay duration, payment rules and possible detention.

Red flag

No verified airport procedure, responsible office or time allowance.

What to do

Contact Immigration before travel; do not leave a complicated case until check-in.

How to Prevent Another Overstay After an Extension or Passport Change

Expired-permit problems often begin with an innocent filing habit: the old PDF is saved, a newer receipt arrives, and nobody stores the final approved permission. Give each traveller, including every child, a separate record of the actual stay expiry with the supporting document attached. Calendar reminders should allow room for a rejected application or sponsor delay, not simply ring on the last permitted day.

ITAS holders need proof of the final approval alongside sponsor messages and payment receipts. A passport replacement can leave old and new document numbers in circulation, so the immigration record may need updating through the proper channel. The question is whether the current permission is documented, not whether someone says the process has started.

Before choosing a flight after midnight, compare the likely immigration-exit date with the permit's last day. A newly issued but unused visa is no substitute for that permission. For future long-term plans, the broader NovAsia visa hub explains legal stay routes; resolving an existing overstay remains a separate matter for Immigration.

Indonesia Overstay: Frequently Asked Questions

When does an overstay start in Bali?
An overstay begins after the final day covered by your current permission to stay. A visa's entry-validity date may be different, so it cannot be used to calculate your permitted time after arrival. If an extension was approved, use the new official end date. Ask Immigration to resolve any conflicting records before relying on a flight date.
How much is the Indonesia overstay fine per day?
Immigration publishes a charge of IDR 1,000,000 per day from the first overdue day for shorter overstays. At that published rate, three days would be an illustrative IDR 3,000,000. The assessment and payment instructions still come from Immigration. Paying the charge is not permission to stay longer.
What happens if I reach 60 days of overstay?
The risk of deportation and an entry ban becomes urgent around that threshold. Surakarta Immigration's public guidance says 60 days and above, while the Indonesian wording of Article 78 refers to “less than 60” and “more than 60” in different subsections. That gap makes exactly day 60 a case for immediate official clarification, not a supposed loophole. Do not postpone contact in the hope of remaining under a fine-only process.
Can I pay an overstay fine at Ngurah Rai Airport?
UK government guidance describes airport payment for some shorter overstays, but it is directed at British nationals and cannot settle every permit type. An expired ITAS, a pending application or a longer overstay may need a separate office procedure. Ask Indonesian Immigration before travelling whether departure settlement is available and which payment method to bring. Do not assume airline check-in staff can resolve it.
What if my KITAS has expired rather than a tourist visa?
Start with the actual ITAS expiry, not the date on an old visa email. A sponsor may control the application, so obtain the submitted documents, payment records and the final decision. An agent's receipt does not prove the status has been renewed. Immigration should also clarify any required closure or exit steps if the underlying residence arrangement has ended.
Will the fine be waived if my flight was cancelled or I was hospitalised?
A cancelled flight or hospital admission does not automatically cancel the charge. Keep dated medical records or airline cancellation notices, your booking reference and the original itinerary. Ngurah Rai announced a narrowly targeted emergency arrangement in March 2026 for passengers affected by Middle East airspace closures. Any relief for a different situation requires an applicable official decision.
Can I extend my stay after an overstay has begun?
Some types of permission may still qualify for an immigration procedure; others cannot be extended after their permitted limits have been used. A submitted or paid application is not automatically an approved extension, and the treatment of a pending case must be clarified with Immigration. A penalty payment never creates a new stay permit on its own. ITAS holders must also coordinate with their sponsor.
