Essential Apps for Everyday Life in Bali
Quick — 10-second read
- In short
- Begin with Google Maps, Gojek, Grab, WhatsApp and your mobile operator app. Add shopping and utility services when you have a reason to use them.
- Who it matters to
- New arrivals who need rides, deliveries and navigation before they have a local bank account.
- Next step
- Save your actual entrance pin, test verification codes and complete one low-value booking with a backup way to pay.
This is a practical orientation, not legal, tax or investment advice.
Which Apps Do You Actually Need When Moving to Bali?
Picture arriving at a rental after a long flight. The gate is down a narrow lane, the property manager is waiting for a message, and your usual card has not yet been tested in an Indonesian app. A phone full of downloads will not solve any of that. A working starting set is smaller: Google Maps, Gojek, Grab, WhatsApp and, once you have a SIM, your operator’s account app.
These tools do different jobs. Maps helps you find and share the entrance. Two ride apps give you another option if the first cannot find a driver. WhatsApp is useful for reaching the host or property manager, but it cannot replace an accurate booking pin. An offline map is worth saving before you travel, particularly if mobile data is unreliable when you land.
The real test comes after installation. Does the app accept your number and send a verification code? Are there vehicles or merchants near your address? Can you complete a small transaction using a payment method actually offered to your account? Those answers matter more than an app-store rating. Shopping platforms, electricity billing and official health services belong in the second round, when you know which ones you need. A local bank account may help later, but it is a poor assumption to build your first evening around.
Getting Around Bali: Gojek, Grab and MyBluebird
The lowest fare is not much use when the driver is waiting on the other side of a wall. Around villas, busy cafés and narrow streets, the pickup point can decide whether a ride works at all. Open Gojek and Grab with the same destination and a sensible, accessible pickup pin. Vehicle availability, route and payment options can differ at that moment, even when both apps serve the area.
Gojek lists GoRide for motorcycle journeys and GoCar for cars. Grab offers GrabBike and GrabCar, along with other vehicle categories in supported locations. Travelling alone with a small bag is a different proposition from arriving with children and several suitcases. The app’s vehicle description and passenger capacity deserve attention before you request a driver. A motorbike is no substitute for a suitable family transfer.
MyBluebird adds conventional Bluebird taxis to the mix. It is worth knowing about if the two ride-hailing apps cannot offer a suitable car, or if you simply prefer that service. There is no useful island-wide rule declaring Grab cheaper than Gojek, or the reverse. An actual quote for your route tells you more than somebody else’s fare from last month.
Airport collection needs its own moment of planning. Official pickup arrangements and app instructions are location-specific and can change. A screenshot from an old travel post may send you to the wrong place; use the arrangements displayed for your arrival and booking. In a crowded area, the driver may need you to walk to an authorised pickup spot instead of stopping where you first opened the app.
Once a booking is confirmed, the car registration and driver profile become your reference points. Match them before getting in, and use the in-app conversation to resolve a confusing meeting point. Gojek and Grab describe several payment methods, including cards and cash for supported rides. Whether your particular overseas card succeeds is a separate question, so have a realistic fallback before you leave for somewhere you cannot easily walk back from.
Food, Groceries and Online Shopping Without Delivery Headaches
Dinner tonight and a replacement laptop charger next week should not go through the same decision process. GoFood and GrabFood list food outlets available to the chosen delivery location. GoMart or GrabMart can cover groceries and smaller everyday needs where those services operate. Tokopedia and Shopee offer a much wider marketplace, though the seller may be shipping from another island.
This matters in Bali because a product listing does not establish where the item is physically stocked. A modest household purchase can take a different route from a meal prepared nearby. Delivery dates, fees and return arrangements belong to the individual seller and checkout, so an attractive product price on its own is not a reliable comparison. For something needed immediately, a nearby store shown in a grocery service may be the less complicated option.
The delivery address deserves almost as much attention as the cart. A resort or villa name may route the courier to a reception desk, the wrong access road or a neighbour’s entrance. Use a reachable phone number, the actual gate pin and a short landmark instruction. If the entrance is hard to explain, agree on a sensible handover spot. Keep the order conversation, receipt and delivery confirmation within the service where possible; WhatsApp remains handy for communicating with the property, not for recreating the transaction elsewhere.
Online shopping brings another layer of decisions. Before paying, look at dispatch location, the full delivered total, the seller’s stated lead time and the procedure for a wrong or damaged item. The checkout may also offer payment methods different from the ones available for a ride. A failed payment is better discovered on a small order than during an urgent purchase, and no platform can promise a smooth return for every merchant.
Managing a Local SIM, Data Balance and Login Codes
A data connection and a phone number that can receive verification messages are two separate necessities. You may be browsing the web perfectly well while a ride app refuses to finish signup because the required code never arrives. That is why the operator’s own account app belongs in the early setup, but only after you understand how your number has been activated.
For Telkomsel subscribers, MyTelkomsel can display the remaining data allowance and provide access to account services. Other Indonesian networks have their own apps. Telkomsel’s published SIMPATI rules explain that foreign customers register with identification such as a passport or relevant stay permit through a GraPARI representative or Telkomsel outlet. Installing an app is not a workaround for identity checks or SIM registration requirements.
A newly obtained number should first prove it can do the basics: receive login codes, accept a top-up and show its active package. Once that works, it is easier to decide which new accounts should use it. Replacing the phone number on an established banking or work account too early can create a second problem while solving the first, especially if recovery messages still go to the old SIM.
Keep the original number reachable until critical account recovery methods have been reviewed. Dual-SIM phones can make the transition easier, while a separate data option offers some resilience when one connection drops. Neither guarantees uninterrupted service. Device registration and IMEI issues follow their own rules, which are worth addressing separately from the simple question of how to see your remaining mobile data.
Bank Apps, E-wallets and QRIS: What Newcomers Can Use
You may see QRIS at a café, a small shop or a service counter and assume there is an app called QRIS waiting to be downloaded. There is not. QRIS is Indonesia’s national QR-payment standard, administered by Bank Indonesia. The code is used through an eligible banking or wallet app, subject to that provider’s own account rules.
An overseas debit or credit card and QRIS are not interchangeable. A card may work for online purchases without giving your banking app the ability to scan an Indonesian merchant code. Cross-border QR links do exist, but they involve specific partner markets and participating financial institutions. Check the feature with the bank or payment provider that issued your account; a generic QR scanner or an international card logo is not sufficient evidence.
Opening a local wallet or bank account is another matter altogether. Eligibility can involve identity verification, supporting documents and a compatible phone number, with requirements varying by service and personal status. A friend’s successful signup is not a promise that yours will work on arrival. Buying an account registered to someone else also leaves control and recovery in another person’s hands.
For getting around, start by reading the payment choices shown before confirming a particular ride. Gojek documents cash and debit or credit card options for supported GoCar bookings; Grab also advertises cash, cards and its local payment choices. A listed method can still fail with an individual overseas card. A small test booking and some usable rupiah cash are more dependable than assuming you will be approved for a local wallet in your first week.
When a QRIS payment does become available, pause on the confirmation screen. The merchant name and amount should match the transaction you intend to make. If they do not, stop and clarify it with the business before authorising anything. The wider questions of banking eligibility, foreign exchange and wallet limits need their own treatment; for daily app setup, the immediate issue is having one functioning method and one genuine backup.
PLN Mobile, SATUSEHAT and All Indonesia: Use Only What Applies
Government and utility apps are useful when they match an actual responsibility. Renting a villa does not automatically mean you must create accounts for every Indonesian public service. Electricity illustrates the problem: PLN Mobile supports billing, prepaid electricity tokens and service requests, yet a guest may never be the person managing that supply account.
Some rentals include electricity in the agreed price. Elsewhere the tenant buys top-up tokens or reimburses the owner for usage. Before linking a meter to an account, understand the arrangement in your rental agreement and get the correct customer or meter number from the person responsible. Having the app does not make you the account holder or settle a billing disagreement.
SATUSEHAT Mobile is an official Ministry of Health service, not a universal substitute for finding appropriate care. The features you can actually use may vary with account registration and the service involved. Someone who needs medical assistance should establish what their clinic or provider requires; there is no reason to treat every health-app function as automatically available to a foreign newcomer.
All Indonesia belongs to international arrival formalities. Indonesia’s immigration ministry announced a unified declaration requirement effective 1 October 2025, with both a website and a mobile option. It may be relevant before a new entry but does not need to sit among your everyday ride and delivery apps. Use the government’s official route for travel forms and check current instructions before flying; copied visa-payment pages and unsolicited links are not reliable substitutes.
Avoiding Fake Apps, Payment Links and Account Lockouts
Many first-week account problems are mundane. A login code still goes to a number you stopped using, a courier proposes an unexpected payment link, or a driver says the booking should be handled outside the platform. The damage often comes from losing the clear record of who was paid and under which order.
Treat the publisher as part of the app’s identity. Download through the service’s official website or a verified app-store listing. A chat offering a special version for foreigners, especially an installation file that bypasses normal protections, is a reason to stop. One-time passwords, PINs and recovery codes belong in your own login process, never in a message to a supposed driver or support agent.
During a ride, match the person and vehicle with your confirmed booking. For deliveries, a clear handover location and a record inside the app make a missing or incorrect order easier to explain. Keep receipts. When paying by QRIS, read the recipient’s name and total before approving the transfer; a swapped code can look completely ordinary until the final screen.
A secondary SIM or backup connection can be useful if your main data plan fails, particularly when you are trying to find the entrance to an unfamiliar property. It does not remove every risk. The aim is simpler: keep access to the accounts you need, know which transaction you authorised and have a way to contact someone when the first option stops working.
