How to Prepare for Power Outages in Bali

Power Outages in Bali: What Can Interrupt Your Supply

A villa with the lights out may be experiencing an entirely local problem. The house next door could still be running its air conditioning because your rental has exhausted its prepaid electricity credit, reached a circuit limit or developed a wiring fault. A failure in PLN's external network calls for a different response.

Bali has experienced documented grid disruptions. PLN reported an island-wide incident on 2 May 2025 and disruptions associated with severe weather in September that year. Neither event tells a prospective tenant how often a particular address will lose power in 2026.

For a remote worker, the useful question is much narrower: which part of this property's electrical supply can fail, who can deal with it and what will continue operating until power returns? A backup generator in the listing is only meaningful once someone can show exactly what it supplies.

PLN Outage or Villa Fault? Find the Source First

Start with the other buildings. A dark street suggests a supply problem beyond your villa, while a lit-up neighbouring property makes the house's meter, connection or circuits worth investigating. This is a clue, not a verdict: a fault can affect just a small part of a distribution network.

PLN Mobile is the official route for outage reports and service information, with PLN Contact Center 123 as another channel. An existing PLN case reference is more useful than a caretaker's guess that the power will be back soon. Notifications may not cover every unexpected event immediately, so an empty app screen is not proof that the utility is unaffected.

A prepaid meter introduces a failure that can look exactly like a power cut to a newcomer. Under prabayar, electricity is purchased in advance using tokens; under pascabayar, consumption is billed afterwards. The account holder should be able to explain the meter's status and verify available credit or the payment record. Leave sealed meters and live electrical equipment untouched.

Now imagine that each bedroom air conditioner works alone, but running several units alongside a water heater trips the villa's protection. The simultaneous load may exceed the contracted supply or a circuit's capacity. Damaged wiring or an electrical fault can produce similar symptoms, however. A qualified electrician needs to identify the cause instead of treating repeated breaker resets as normal household maintenance.

This distinction also determines whom to involve. PLN handles utility-side issues, while the owner must arrange an appropriate professional to examine the rental's internal installation. Sparking, a burning smell, damaged cables or water near electrical gear take priority over any troubleshooting.

How to Check a Villa’s Power Supply Before Renting

An afternoon viewing is a poor stress test. The agent turns on a few lights, shows you the bedroom air conditioner and confirms that the Wi-Fi icon appears on a phone. None of this tells you what happens on a hot evening when multiple rooms need cooling, someone uses the kitchen and the water pump starts.

Ask for the property's registered PLN capacity, or daya, expressed in volt-amperes (VA). The figure should come from the actual customer account or meter information, not a claim that the villa has "plenty of power". It describes the contracted connection; it does not certify the internal wiring, circuit layout or condition of older appliances. Establish whether electricity is prepaid or billed monthly at the same time.

A rental advertised as having backup power needs a demonstration. Does the arrangement cover the fibre terminal and router, or only selected lighting? Will the water pump still supply the bathrooms? Can the gate be opened when the motors lose power? Ask the owner to arrange a controlled test with the normal essential devices running, without tenants touching panels or live connections.

Vague assurances are less useful than a small set of records: the PLN customer details, any recent outage tickets for the address, a qualified electrician's contact and a clear explanation of which circuits are supported. If protection trips during the viewing, repeating the test until it stays on is a bad sign. That is the moment for an electrical inspection.

The lease should settle responsibility before a problem appears. Someone must buy prepaid credit or pay bills, report supply faults, authorise repairs and service any battery or generator. Without that agreement, an outage quickly becomes an argument about who has permission to call whom and who pays the bill.

Keeping Wi-Fi and Work Devices Online During a Power Cut

The call stays on your laptop screen, the room goes dark, and the router remains lit thanks to a small UPS. Then the meeting freezes. The missing piece is often the fibre optical network terminal, or ONT, which was plugged into an unprotected socket. A broadcasting Wi-Fi network can exist without any working connection to the internet.

A reliable setup covers the entire on-site path: the fibre terminal, Wi-Fi router and whatever device you use for work. A separate access point or network switch may add another plug to the list. Powering those boxes still cannot rescue an upstream provider cabinet or fibre route that has failed during the same event.

Runtime estimates need two different specifications. Watts describe how quickly the connected equipment uses power; watt-hours describe stored energy. Divide usable battery capacity by measured load for an initial estimate, then allow for conversion losses, battery age and equipment that draws more power at certain moments. Real testing at the villa is the only sensible basis for promising yourself enough time to finish a meeting.

A mobile data connection provides a genuinely different route when the fixed line is unavailable. It also has dependencies: local coverage, a phone or hotspot with charge, and a cell site that continues operating during the interruption. A speed test made from the desk you actually plan to use tells you more than an operator's coverage map.

There is a practical fallback beyond hardware. Keep the phone charged, know how to switch your laptop to mobile data and identify somewhere you could complete urgent work if both networks go down. Most remote workers benefit from solving these modest points of failure before considering equipment sized for a whole house.

UPS, Power Station or Generator: Choosing a Backup

A UPS is about continuity. Networking equipment may need to stay powered through the moment the mains fails, and a computer may need time for an orderly shutdown. Look at the UPS's supported load, battery condition and transfer behaviour. A label on the box cannot tell you what will stay on in a particular villa.

A portable power station is often more flexible for selected essentials: charging a laptop, running low-power networking gear or providing a light. Its useful output and stored energy matter more than a marketing description. Some models offer a suitable pass-through or backup mode, while others interrupt power or require manual intervention. Treat uninterrupted operation as a feature to verify, not an assumption.

A generator changes the scale of the discussion. It may support higher electrical demand for longer, provided its continuous and starting capacities are appropriate. It also needs a safe outdoor location, fuel arrangements, servicing and professional separation from utility power when connected to household circuits. Those responsibilities are significant for a long-stay tenant as well as an owner.

Air conditioners and refrigerators deserve their own calculation. A compressor's start-up demand may exceed its running power, so adding up the ordinary wattage figures can underestimate what the backup must handle. The villa's supply rating in VA and the generator's quoted watts are not always interchangeable figures; an electrician should assess the actual equipment and proposed configuration.

The right choice can be deliberately small. Someone protecting one work call may only need a tested network-and-laptop arrangement. Keeping every air conditioner operating during an extended outage is a substantially different project, with very different constraints.

Which Backup Power Option Fits the Job

Option 1 of 3

UPS

Bridge short network interruptions and allow a safe shutdown.
Automatic backup; check transfer time.
Useful when both ONT and router are covered.
Small consumer units are generally unsuitable.
Limited energy; battery degradation.
Option 2 of 3

Portable power station

Run selected essentials away from the mains.
Model-dependent; an interruption is possible.
Useful with adequate capacity and outputs.
Only if running and surge ratings match.
Cannot guarantee seamless transfer or provider uptime.
Option 3 of 3

Generator

Power heavier loads when properly sized.
Start-up and proper isolation/transfer.
Possible, often excessive for one router.
Requires start-up sizing and safe installation.
Exhaust, noise, fuel and maintenance.

Protecting Electronics and Using a Generator Safely

A fuel-powered generator can be dangerous even when it sounds as though it is running normally. Carbon monoxide has no smell or colour, and exhaust can enter a home from a covered patio or open garage. The US CDC advises outdoor operation more than 20 feet, roughly six metres, from doors, windows and vents, together with a functioning CO alarm. That is safety guidance, not a statement of Bali building law.

The electrical connection is a separate hazard. Feeding power into a wall outlet can send electricity backwards through household wiring and towards the grid, putting occupants and repair crews at risk. A proper isolation and transfer arrangement must be designed and installed by a qualified professional with the owner's approval. A tenant should never improvise a connection to the distribution board.

Restored mains power may expose other weaknesses in a villa's wiring. Surge protection, grounding and protective devices need to match the actual installation; they are not problems a generic plug-in strip can necessarily fix. Ask an electrician to assess heat-damaged sockets, loose connections or electrical equipment affected by moisture before it is used again.

Water near outlets or a panel, arcing and a burning smell call for immediate distance from the hazard and professional assistance. This is a guide to recognising risks, not a substitute for inspecting the property or installing electrical equipment.

Electrical Safety Red Flags at a Rental

“A covered patio is fine for the generator”

How it works

Exhaust and carbon monoxide can enter rooms from semi-enclosed spaces.

Red flag

Fuel generator beneath a roof or beside an opening.

What to do

Do not run it there; require safe outdoor placement away from openings and a CO alarm.

“We can plug the generator into a wall socket”

How it works

Backfeeding can energise circuits and endanger utility workers.

Red flag

No professionally installed transfer and isolation arrangement.

What to do

Reject the setup; use a qualified electrician and a proper transfer method.

“The breaker tripped again? Just reset it”

How it works

An overload or faulty circuit remains unresolved and may worsen.

Red flag

Repeated trips during normal use, hot outlets or burning smells.

What to do

Stop loading the circuit and arrange a professional electrical inspection.

“This backup can run the whole villa”

How it works

The claim may ignore compressor starts, water pumps and conversion losses.

Red flag

No connected-load list, watt and watt-hour figures or witnessed test.

What to do

Define essential loads and verify running and start-up demands before relying on it.

What to Do When the Power Goes Out in Bali

When the lights fail, do not rush to restart appliances. Water around sockets, damaged cables, sparking or a burning smell changes the situation from an inconvenience to a safety concern. Stay clear and get the owner and an appropriate professional involved. A wet electrical panel should not be touched.

If the area is safe, find out whether neighbouring homes have electricity. Compare that with PLN information and ask the account holder about the meter, including any prepaid credit. A villa that repeatedly trips only when several appliances run is not simply waiting for a neighbourhood restoration; its internal circuits need professional assessment.

For a suspected supply fault, PLN Mobile provides a complaint-reporting route and PLN Contact Center 123 is another official channel. Get the customer account details from the landlord, record the case or ticket number and send it to whoever manages the property. Photographs can help explain visible damage if they can be taken from a safe location; keep account and identity information out of public posts. A report is not a guaranteed restoration deadline.

For a prolonged interruption, the useful priorities are lighting, charged phones, drinking water if a powered pump has stopped, and an alternative connection or place to work. Leave the refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible and follow food-safety guidance if cooling has been lost for an extended period. Heavy appliances should remain off until supply conditions and the electrical installation are safe.

Bali Power Outages: Frequently Asked Questions

Are power cuts common across Bali?
Island-wide incidents do happen, but they cannot predict the outage experience of a specific rental. PLN documented a major event in May 2025; it says little about how often one villa will lose power during your stay. Ask for any recorded incidents affecting the address and compare the owner’s account with nearby residents. Treat confident neighbourhood-wide promises with caution.
How can I tell whether PLN or the villa caused the outage?
Neighbouring homes and any PLN notice give you the first clues. If they still have electricity, ask the account holder to confirm whether the meter is prepaid and has credit. Protection that trips when several air conditioners start is a different symptom from a street-wide failure. A qualified electrician should rule out both excessive load and wiring defects.
How do I report a power outage to PLN in Bali?
Use the official PLN Mobile app to submit a fault report or contact PLN through 123. The app supports complaint tracking, although alerts may not describe every unexpected outage straight away. Have the registered customer details available through your landlord. Keep the ticket reference so both of you can follow the same case.
Will a UPS keep my Wi-Fi and laptop running?
A UPS can keep a small network running if its output and battery capacity suit the load. Include the optical network terminal as well as the router; a laptop may already have its own battery. Actual runtime depends on device draw, usable watt-hours and conversion losses. An upstream provider failure can still disconnect you while every box in the villa remains powered.
Can a generator run the air conditioner during an outage?
Some generators can power an air conditioner, but the unit’s starting demand may be substantially higher than its running draw. The proposed generator needs capacity for the actual combination of devices, not just the air conditioner’s brochure rating. A qualified electrician must plan household connections and isolation. Exhaust placement and fuel management need equal attention.
What should I check about a villa’s electricity before signing a lease?
Obtain the recorded PLN capacity in VA and confirm prepaid or postpaid billing. A viewing should include normal simultaneous appliance use and an owner-arranged demonstration of what the backup actually powers. Find out who controls the PLN account and who can call an electrician. Agree in writing who pays for electricity credit, electrical repairs and backup maintenance.
