Income and remittances: tax questions in Bali
In a bank statement, money looks the same. In real life it can be compensation for work, business revenue, a dividend, debt repayment, an asset sale or your own savings. Do not let one statement line decide the question for you: reconstruct the economic history of the movement first.
Which transfers need separate review?
A review is not only for a large amount. Signals can include regular payments, contract income, transfer from a connected person, an operation after an asset sale or money whose origin is already hard to explain with records. DGT treats income and supporting records as part of tax context. This does not classify a particular receipt, but it shows why history and documents matter more than a convenient transfer note.
Short answer
Keep a simple ledger: event, source, character of money, period and evidence. Do not call every incoming transfer income, or conversely own funds, without a record. Then check your tax position and take complex cases to a professional, especially where several countries, employment or business activity, assets or family arrangements are involved.
Evidence scope
- Checked on
- 2026-10-15
- Geography
- Bali, Indonesia; money movement can involve other countries and their rules.
- Audience
- A person receiving, transferring or planning to document money while living in Bali.
- Established
- DGT treats income and supporting records as part of tax context; treaty material is maintained by specific country.
- Not established
- Taxation, exemption, reporting, rate, deadline, treaty relief, source or character of a particular receipt for an individual.
A statement is not the money story
A bank normally shows date, amount and sender. Meaningful review needs more: what happened before transfer, which agreement or decision supported it, which period it relates to, who the parties are and which record connects the operation to reality. Reconstructing those details a year later is much harder, especially when accounts, currency or counterparties have changed.

Make a five-column ledger
For each movement, five honest fields are enough: event; origin; what happened economically; period; record. Add a link to the statement, agreement, invoice, dividend resolution, sale record or evidence of transfer between your own accounts. This is not an accounting form and not a tax calculation. It is a way to see where facts are already missing.

Residence context changes questions, not records
Tax position in Indonesia connects to a separate set of facts about presence and intention to reside. It can matter for later review of income and reporting, but it does not automatically name every receipt income or a transfer of own funds. Establish context first, then review each type of movement.
- Determination of domestic and foreign tax subjects
A cross-border question is always specific
The phrase “money came from another country” answers none of the key questions. Countries, parties, period, source, the person’s status and, where relevant, an agreement between states all matter. Official treaty material is maintained by specific jurisdiction. Do not carry a conclusion from another country, citizenship or online example into your situation.

A property transaction does not get a label from a bank transfer
A payment for reservation, agreement, rent, sale or refund involving a property should be retained with records for that transaction itself. Rights in the asset and contractual structure form a separate file. A tax question can intersect with it, but do not conclude from payment reference or a broker’s attractive description alone.

Decision steps
- Name the event
Record what actually happened before receipt: work, service, sale, refund, distribution or transfer between your own accounts.
- Attach the primary record
Link the movement to an agreement, invoice, resolution, statement, sale record or another primary record.
- Check overall context
Check which tax position and which countries may relate to the period of the operation.
- Pause before final classification
For income, business, several countries, family transactions or assets, take the ledger to a professional for individual assessment.

- Why it matters
- Receipt date does not always describe the whole operation.
- Evidence
- Statements from both sides of the movement and the original money history.
- Why it matters

- Evidence
- Countries of source, counterparty, residence and previously used tax records.
- Why it matters
- Cross-border rules are not universal.
- Evidence
- Agreement, annexes, property address card and payment chain.
- Why it matters

FAQ
If money came from abroad, is it not income in Indonesia?
Do not infer this from transfer geography. First identify the operation’s character, personal tax context, period and records; several countries may require separate assessment.
Can I call any transfer my own savings?
No. That explanation needs a consistent documentary chain of origin and movement between accounts.
Does this page resolve sale or purchase of a villa?
No. A property transaction has its own rights, agreements and records. Tax review may use them as facts, but it does not replace property review.
Should small regular receipts be retained?
Yes. Regularity does not make the history less important. Keep it with period, source and record so context does not need to be reconstructed from memory later.
