Which Bali Waste Collection Package Covers a Villa’s Actual Waste?
Published · Updated
Why a single pickup subscription may not cover a villa
The rubbish left outside a villa is rarely one neat category. A regular household creates food packaging, bottles and meal scraps. A gardener adds damp leaves and pruning bags; a busy checkout can leave several more sacks than the usual weekly allowance. A low monthly price only helps if the service actually collects the materials piling up at the property.
The two operators advertise different kinds of collection. ecoBali describes segregated non-organic household waste, with an organic component available only in certain locations, and offers tailored commercial collection for villas and other businesses. Urban Compost sells a home food-scrap service built around an 8L bucket, while garden collection uses 100L bags. Neither container is a mixed-rubbish allowance.
The dates and labels attached to the offers are as important as their figures. ecoBali's household pricing graphic is explicitly marked as a 2025 price list, and its individual rates could not be independently read and tied to a current invoice. Urban Compost's newer website uses “starting from” prices; another public page run by the same service still shows older food and garden arrangements. These descriptions are not confirmed villa quotations.

How the offer treats household, food and garden waste
The first contract question is what happens to the ordinary non-organic stream. ecoBali describes source separation, colour-coded bags or stands, and collection of segregated materials. Its household page also mentions a 20L organics bucket. Paper, bottles, metal and plastic packaging may be relevant to that service, subject to the actual acceptance rules. Sorting waste downstream does not imply acceptance of unsorted rubbish from a villa. Used hygiene products, contaminated packaging and other residual waste need explicit coverage; a general statement about recycling does not settle that point.
Urban Compost's food service has a much clearer boundary. Its newer website lists fruit and vegetable scraps, cooked leftovers, rice, meat, seafood, tea bags, coffee grounds and eggshells. It explicitly tells clients to keep plastic, paper, tissue, glass, metal, pet waste, cooking oil, broth and other liquids, and garden waste out of the bucket. Some 2023 exceptions differ; staff should follow the latest written acceptance list. A plastic label removed from a fruit peel belongs outside the food bucket, even when both items came from the same kitchen job.
The residential offer is centred on an 8L container collected once a week and exchanged for a clean one. Eight litres describes a vessel, not the total weight collected over a month. An 8L bucket may fill well before collection day. A legacy add-on price is Rp25,000 per extra bucket monthly; the current rate is unconfirmed. For business food scraps, Urban instead advertises 20L buckets, collection up to three times weekly and bespoke pricing. Those terms should not be assigned to an individual holiday villa without confirming the operator's client classification.
Garden waste needs its own containers and eligibility rules. The older Urban Regular description allows up to four 100L bags per collection on a fortnightly round; Priority allows up to five bags with weekly pickup. On the newer website, garden collection starts at Rp200,000 per month and is described as occurring “up to” once a week, without identifying those older named tiers. The two descriptions cannot be merged into a promise of four bags every week for the old Regular price. Urban's 2023 appendix excludes trunks over 5cm and chemically treated cuttings from standard garden pickup. Coconuts may attract separate handling, depending on the exact product.
Picture a gardener clearing several sacks of leaves along with a heavy branch after a storm. The leaf bags may fit a planned round; the trunk can fall outside the stated material limits even when unused bag capacity remains. Urban's legacy one-off garden offering starts at Rp350,000 for members and Rp550,000 for non-members, but that one-off service specifically excludes coconuts and sizeable logs. ecoBali advertises an Extra Pickup option for subscribers and non-subscribers, including villas, without publishing a flat trip price. Furniture, building debris and electronics require separate acceptance terms.
Will the operator actually serve the villa address?
A service-area map is only a starting point for villa collection. ecoBali names Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan for its wider collection operation. The household organic component, however, is advertised only for Canggu and Ubud. A property in southern Badung may therefore be inside the company's general coverage while still falling outside the specifically described household organic service. Neither confirms a collection for that villa.
Urban Compost's newer homepage lists Canggu, Sanur, Denpasar, Bukit, Sibang and Ubud. Its other public page refers to more than 83 desa or kelurahan across the island. Those geographical labels do not answer whether a pickup crew can enter a particular gang, reach a bin store behind a gate or access a property whose caretaker is absent on collection morning. Marketing areas and registered villages do not always match. Operational coverage needs the actual address and Google Maps pin.
The collection point matters as much as the street name. Urban's older registration form asks for the villa name, gang and precise map marker. Its 2023 conditions require containers to be left at a fixed pickup point and say that collection days are route-dependent and may be changed with notice. Neighbourhood coverage does not imply collection inside the compound. The location of the bins, access instructions, gate hours and handover person should be settled before the first payment.
Capacity and customer type are separate checks. ecoBali offers commercial quotations for villas, yet nothing in the public text says every privately owned holiday house must use the commercial category. Urban's food services likewise distinguish individual and business customers, with different buckets and frequency. The invoice must identify the payer and villa. A temporary signup restriction reported in April 2026 does not establish October availability. A listed location, a possible route and an accepted new account are three different things.
Signs the advertised plan may leave a collection gap
A plan can look suitable on a price card and still leave the villa without the needed collection.
Badung appears on the area list, but the lane and gate are unconfirmed.
What to doGet the collection point, vehicle access and scheduled day against the exact pin.
“Organics included” is assumed outside ecoBali’s stated Canggu/Ubud household area.
What to doObtain an address-specific answer about kitchen scraps, not just broad coverage.
An 8L food bucket is expected to handle garden bags and branches.
What to doConfirm a separate garden plan, 100L bag allowance and wood/coconut exclusions.
A legacy household price has been budgeted as a current holiday-villa rate.
What to doRequest a dated quote for the property’s client class and actual volume.
Two villa budgets: disclosed amounts and missing costs
Consider first a home where the owners live year-round and a gardener rarely needs collection. The predictable waste streams are food scraps and ordinary packaging. Urban Compost's newer listing starts residential food collection at Rp160,000 per month for one 8L bucket and weekly swapping. An older page operated by the same service still advertises Rp150,000 for a similar offer. They are versions of one supplier’s offer, with no confirmed cheaper rate today. Even if a household receives the Rp160,000 starting rate, plastic packaging and residual rubbish are still outside that food-scrap subscription.
The next possible component is ecoBali household collection. Its page says that households commit to at least six months and pay in advance, but the public household price graphic is labelled as a 2025 list. No reliable, matched current figure for a particular household tier is available from the readable page text. If ecoBali quotes a monthly base H, six months cost 6 × H before invoice-specific taxes, bins and charges. Without H and those terms, a complete household monthly figure — and a defensible first-payment total — remains unknown.
There may be overlap even in that simple household example. ecoBali's household description includes a 20L organic bucket where that service is available, specifically in Canggu and Ubud. If the contracted price already covers suitable kitchen scraps, adding a separate Urban food plan might buy an overlapping service. Conversely, a house in Denpasar should not assume that the ecoBali organic collection promise applies merely because Denpasar appears in the general service-area list. The useful budget is built around accepted, non-overlapping waste streams, not around adding every published line that sounds relevant.
A short-stay villa with a garden has a different cost pattern. Guest turnovers and garden maintenance create uneven demand. ecoBali advertises commercial collection starting at Rp500,000 a month, with the actual fee depending on collection period and waste volume. Urban's older garden Regular card shows Rp200,000 with a fortnightly pickup and Priority Rp300,000 with weekly pickup. Its newer garden summary instead starts at Rp200,000 a month and says collection is available up to once a week. Neither listing establishes the villa’s garden allowance, and Rp500,000 plus an old garden rate is not a full bill.
One useful piece of arithmetic is deliberately narrower: the newer Urban site advertises food pickup from Rp160,000 and garden pickup from Rp200,000 a month, so their advertised starting points total Rp360,000 per month. This is a conditional sum for two organic waste services only, provided the operator confirms that both can be purchased at the same pin and with the needed quantities and schedule. It excludes packaging, residual rubbish, extra buckets, overflow, VAT where applicable, and one-off collections. The older Urban page separately quotes one-time garden collection from Rp350,000 for members and Rp550,000 for non-members; those are per-request starting rates, not a monthly add-on. The first payment is still unknown without a confirmed term.
Which subscription terms change the amount payable
Subscription terms determine the first payment just as much as the monthly headline. ecoBali states that household customers sign up for a minimum six-month period with payment up front. The accompanying 2025 graphic notes that its prices exclude 11% VAT and that the Extra Large option does not include the bin cost. The historical tax note does not set the treatment of an October 2026 invoice. The commercial starting rate is a separate quotation-based offer; the household six-month condition should not be transplanted into a villa business contract without confirmation.
Urban's historical documents describe a different commitment. Its older signup form offered residential plans in three-, six- and twelve-month periods and listed an additional 8L food bucket at Rp25,000 per month. The operator's 2023 general terms specify a 90-day minimum, payment in advance and cancellation without a refund; they also allow a pause of up to two months, extending the membership period. The newer Urban website repeats the two-month pause feature but does not provide the full current cancellation wording alongside the headline prices. A 2026 local interview also described a three-month residential minimum. The current contract, rather than the old PDF, must govern payment and refunds.
The practical pressure point for a rental villa is the schedule. An owner may buy weekly collection only to find that the bins fill immediately after an unexpected extra checkout. Overflow pricing is not included in the timetable. ecoBali has a separate Extra Pickup service for both subscribers and non-subscribers, but no universal trip fee is advertised. Urban's older terms require collection units to be presented at a designated fixed point and allow day changes with notice. Missed rounds, public holidays, contaminated food buckets, broken containers and unusually heavy pruning can all affect the arrangement; the operator's current written terms must establish whether the response is a replacement collection, a surcharge, a refused load or another procedure.
There is also an accounting distinction between a private collection invoice and a local levy. Badung's official legal register records Regulation No. 57/2025 on regional retribution as in force. That establishes a relevant public-law framework, not the precise waste fee attached to a particular address, nor a rate charged by ecoBali or Urban Compost. Any local levy needs its own legal basis and payee. Tax, bin charges and local payments should not be silently folded into a provider's advertised “from” price. Only an itemised, current invoice can turn these known questions into a defensible initial cash requirement.
What to ask before paying for a plan
What to ask before paying for a plan
- Do you serve this exact pin? Where is the handover point, can your vehicle access it and which day is collection?
- Will this short-stay villa be classed as a household or business, and who signs and pays?
- Exactly which streams are covered: residual rubbish, food scraps, leaves and branches? What is excluded?
- What is the per-pickup bucket or bag allowance, and what do extra bins, overflow and one-off pickups cost?
- Please provide the full first invoice in IDR, showing the prepaid term, tax, bins, one-off fees and any separate local levy/payee.
- What happens on holidays or missed rounds? Can the plan be paused, cancelled and any unused prepayment refunded?
Bali expert view

The cheapest line on a price card rarely tells a villa operator what will still be sitting beside the gate on collection day. Kitchen scraps may fit a weekly bucket while garden cuttings require a different service. Occupancy patterns can stretch a nominally adequate allowance during a run of checkouts. That is why an apparently dearer plan can be the more relevant one when its collection frequency and container allowance match the real workload. Even then, a published service area is not a confirmed route into a narrow lane. Nor does a monthly subscription automatically pay for an unscheduled vehicle. The useful comparison starts with three separate streams and a fourth contingency for overflow. For a holiday rental, the client classification and pickup point belong in the same written offer as the price. Until those details are settled, the advertised minimum is a partial signal rather than a property-wide waste budget.
