What Does Backup Internet for a Bali Villa Really Cost?
Published · Updated
What needs to stay online when the fiber link fails?
A resident trying to finish one urgent video call may be perfectly well served by a phone hotspot, provided the plan permits tethering and the phone has already been tested inside the villa. It does not provide independent connectivity to an empty holiday rental.
An unattended villa needs a different arrangement. The cellular connection must be provisioned before the fiber fails, and the property network must have a way to move its traffic to the secondary connection. Buying a mobile modem creates another possible internet source; it does not establish that guest Wi-Fi, an office Ethernet socket or an access controller will use it when the primary WAN disappears.
For remote-working guests, a large data allowance cannot compensate for an unstable uplink. A meeting sends audio and video out of the property as well as bringing them in, so the quality of that upstream path, latency variation and congestion at the relevant hour all matter. Estimates of gigabytes per guest should come from actual usage records or a realistic trial, not from a universal formula.
A payment terminal, smart lock or cloud-managed controller may consume comparatively little data, yet fail in a more consequential way if its session cannot reconnect. The backup design therefore needs a defined set of essential devices and a policy that prevents TVs, streaming and software updates from using the entire allowance. If the router or the controller loses electrical power, cellular signal on its own will keep nothing operating.
Which option fits your situation
Requires tethering eligibility, sufficient indoor signal and someone on site; it will not switch the villa network automatically.
Test upload and latency, and keep guest streaming from exhausting the allowance.
Validate cloud access, logins and each device after switching; low data use is not enough.
Assign ownership for renewals, alerts, modem compatibility and the power path.
Which published mobile plans can actually serve as a backup?
The six offers below are published products, not six interchangeable ways of running a villa. Telkomsel Orbit is sold as a home modem service, XL’s Xtra Combo Flex eSIM is presented for compatible mobile devices, and IM3 has a separate prepaid offer with location-specific data. A public price should be treated as a starting quote until a purchaser has confirmed the right device, address, sales channel and renewal method.
The main Orbit product page lists 30-day Orbit Deals at IDR82,000 for 45GB and IDR132,000 for 90GB. These packages are intended for Orbit equipment, not an ordinary SIM installed in any phone or unapproved third-party router. Star G1’s advertised 150GB bundle is spread across six 30-day periods, with 25GB in each; it is not a fresh 150GB allowance every month. Telkomsel’s pricing FAQ also states that Orbit plan prices change with the user’s location. A villa needs the offer shown for its own registered location, not a nationwide-looking price copied from a landing page.
The Bali-specific Orbit 5G offer quotes IDR2,499,000 for the H1 modem, IDR2,809,000 for Z1 and IDR3,169,000 for G1, each advertised with 200GB for the first 30 days. Its 100GB package costs IDR131,000 per 30 days and the 250GB option costs IDR260,000, but the latter splits into 200GB of all-network data plus 50GB available only on Telkomsel 5G. Crucially, the special plan prices are restricted to the first three months after activating an eligible 5G modem; subsequent normal offers are shown in MyOrbit or MyTelkomsel, without a published fixed price on that Bali page. It would be misleading to present the advertised price as a permanent annual contract.
XL’s Xtra Combo Flex eSIM page provides a useful mobile comparison: 14GB for IDR46,000, 30GB for IDR70,000, 55GB for IDR100,000, 80GB for IDR140,000 and 150GB for IDR168,000, all valid for 30 days. International customers need an eligible eSIM phone, a passport and its IMEI. Nothing on that page establishes support for an unattended home router or guarantees that a particular hotspot, remote renewal or router eSIM profile will work. This may be good value for a resident who can intervene; it is not automatically the cheaper always-on alternative to Orbit.
IM3 Freedom Internet Kita lists 45GB general data plus 20GB zonal data for IDR100,000 over 30 days. Automatic renewal is expressly unavailable. Because a Bali-address checkout and suitable unattended-device use have not been established, that IM3 product is explained in the article but is not assumed to be a deployable sixth backup option. Instead, the comparison includes XL’s separately published 150GB eSIM. Nor can location-based prices for other IM3 Freedom Internet products be treated as universal; its purchasing page asks for a city before showing local offers.

How much of the advertised allowance works during an outage?
A headline allowance is only useful after the restrictions have been stripped out. Indonesian plan descriptions often separate kuota utama (general data), kuota 5G (5G-only data) and quota valid in particular zones. Masa aktif is the plan’s period of validity, while harga promo signals promotional pricing. None of those expressions should be flattened into an unconditional claim that a backup modem has a particular number of gigabytes available everywhere or indefinitely.
Consider the Orbit 5G Bali package advertised as 250GB. Its published breakdown is 200GB for Telkomsel networks generally, plus 50GB that can be consumed only while the modem is actually on Telkomsel 5G. If the property falls back to 4G LTE, the extra 50GB does not become ordinary data. The 100GB Orbit 5G offer lists 100GB of all-network data without that 5G supplement. Both products are specified for Orbit 5G modems, rather than being portable prepaid packages for any cellular device.
IM3’s 65GB Freedom Internet Kita illustrates a different constraint. The contract breaks it into 45GB Kuota Utama, usable across IOH networks, and 20GB Kuota Kita available in designated 4G zones. IM3 identifies *888*90# as a way to check zone eligibility on the relevant SIM. The same terms state that renewal is not automatic; a live SIM and even an unused balance are no substitute for a valid, newly purchased period when the existing one expires.
The XL Xtra Combo Flex cards mark 55GB and 150GB as *Main Quota*, with no separately advertised local or 5G-only allocation for those offers. That is a useful distinction, but it says nothing definitive about using the plan in a particular home router or renewing it remotely. A fixed-allowance package is not equivalent to an unlimited service, and undocumented throttling should not be invented either.
Actual consumption depends on what the property lets through during the outage. Recording usage during a representative working day is more reliable than assigning an invented allowance to each guest. The distinction between an exhausted allocation, a plan that has expired and a SIM that has lost eligibility matters when diagnosing why a supposedly ready backup no longer passes data.
What is the first-year cost with the modem and main fiber line?
After a fiber outage, a resident might buy a 30-day XL 55GB phone eSIM for IDR100,000 if eligible. That is a possible emergency recovery expense, not an always-ready second internet service. For an unstaffed villa, a backup has to be active before an outage and usable without asking a guest to set it up.
The accounting trap is a 30-day validity period. Twelve such periods cover 360 days, five short of a 365-day planning horizon. Consecutive coverage for the full period requires 13 terms, subject to how the operator handles activation and expiry. Three calendar months of introductory eligibility may not align perfectly with three 30-day purchases, so the illustration below treats the introductory period as three eligible terms only if actual activation and purchase dates support that assumption. The fiber component is modeled as twelve monthly invoices; owners should reconcile that assumption with their provider’s billing schedule.
Hardware is a real part of the budget. The main Orbit site lists the Star G1 modem at IDR445,000, while the Bali Orbit 5G page lists the H1 at IDR2,499,000. The Bali H1 offer includes an advertised 200GB allocation for the first 30 days. It can count as one paid-for-in-advance backup term only if that exact bundle is obtained and 200GB will cover the required workload during that period. Star G1 advertises a 150GB introductory allowance divided into six separate 30-day allocations of 25GB each. Treating it as six covered periods is reasonable only where each period’s traffic stays within 25GB; higher demand creates extra top-up costs that do not vanish because a bundle is included.
Take a deliberately conditional H1 example using the advertised Orbit 5G 100GB plan at IDR131,000 per 30 days. Suppose the initial bundled allocation fully covers term one and the promotion genuinely covers the first three 30-day terms after activation. Of the 13 terms required, two further terms are purchased at the introductory rate; the remaining ten require a normal post-promotion rate, R. Modem plus cellular plans would then cost IDR2,499,000 + 2 × IDR131,000 + 10 × R = IDR2,761,000 + 10 × R. Adding fiber at F per month and compatible failover/power equipment at a one-off cost C gives 12 × F + IDR2,761,000 + 10 × R + C. No numerical full-year total can be justified while R remains unknown.
The lower-priced 4G-oriented Orbit equipment yields a different conditional illustration. If the Orbit Deals 45GB rate stays at the published IDR82,000 for all thirteen purchases, plan expenditure alone would be IDR1,066,000, before buying a suitable modem. Alternatively, a qualifying Star G1 with six bundled 25GB terms and then seven purchased 45GB terms would produce IDR445,000 + 7 × IDR82,000 = IDR1,019,000 for the modem and those later plans. It excludes fiber, genuine dual-WAN switching, backup power and any additional data needed during the bundled months.
Unknown required prices are not free. If the fiber invoice is unavailable, only a cellular-and-equipment subtotal can be discussed, not the complete cost of running both connections. Delivery, unquoted installation, excess data purchases, electricity and failures of the cellular network are outside the calculation and should not be replaced by speculative figures.

Where coverage maps stop being useful for a specific villa
Coverage maps are only screening tools. It may indicate that a carrier claims service in a locality, but it does not show whether the modem will remain usable behind concrete, inside a service cupboard or in the room where guests hold meetings. Telkomsel provides separate 5G and 4G references; XLSMART offers a 5G coverage and supported-device checker. No address-specific eligibility result has been established by viewing those dynamic pages alone.
The practical questions vary by property, not by a neighborhood ranking. Around Canggu and Badung, a crowded building environment and evening demand might affect an individual test. An Ubud or Gianyar villa may have internal walls, varied terrain or a utility room in a poor reception position; a Bukit Peninsula property has its own site layout and construction constraints. A modem sitting by a window can produce a very different result from the same model hidden in a metal cabinet on the opposite side of a building.
Telkomsel announced expansion of its 5G network around Denpasar and Badung in August 2024. That announcement documents a rollout at that time, not present-day indoor throughput or a service promise for all of Canggu, Ubud and Bukit. XL’s official 5G help page also names Badung and Denpasar among its service areas while specifying the need for eligible hardware and plans. These references can narrow a shortlist; the deciding evidence is how the purchased product works at the actual premises, especially when its connection drops from 5G to 4G.
A useful on-site trial includes the planned modem location, the guest workspace and the areas housing essential devices. Record whether the equipment attaches to 4G or 5G, measure downstream and upstream performance, and observe latency and connection stability over multiple times of day. Repeat after deliberately using a 4G connection where the equipment permits it. The nPerf Denpasar map adds crowdsourced observations, but samples are unevenly distributed; a location without a recorded test is not necessarily a location without signal.
One more boundary matters: losing a fiber link is not the same as losing mains power. A coverage layer cannot tell an owner whether the modem, the switching router or the access controller stays energized, or whether a wider power fault will also disrupt the cellular network. It is still evidence for one configuration at one time, not a 100% uptime guarantee.
How to prove failover works before guests need it
The entire chain has to work: an active and eligible plan, the right modem, usable indoor coverage, a network device that can switch WAN paths, and continued power to everything the property needs. Automatic switching is usually implemented by a suitable dual-WAN gateway or equivalent configuration. The Orbit modem itself does not prove that an existing guest Wi-Fi network will switch automatically, and a phone hotspot cannot be assumed to reach an empty villa without intervention.
The safest trial is planned with the property manager, before the next arrival and away from live payments or other critical activity. Temporarily isolate the primary WAN while keeping the network powered, then observe the actual guest and management services. Can a device on the regular guest SSID still reach the internet? Does an ongoing video meeting recover, and can a new meeting be started? Do the payment terminal, cloud-managed access and any wired controllers re-establish the connections they need? Switching times should be reported only if measured at the villa, and some existing VPN or video sessions may need to reconnect when their outward-facing IP address changes.
The return to fiber deserves a second observation. A gateway may stay on cellular until its own failback criteria are met, potentially consuming paid data long after the initial outage. Compare the remaining allowance before and after the trial, and make sure the modem can still be administered and topped up without relying on the failed fiber path. Consider a separate power-failure scenario: an excellent 5G signal is useless if the modem, Wi-Fi access points or security controller all shut down. A UPS only helps the devices actually attached to it, and no local battery guarantees that a carrier’s wider network remains available.
Every 30-day package has an end date, and a discounted first purchase is not evidence that later packages will renew at the same price or automatically. Someone needs responsibility for checking balances, receiving failure alerts, buying the next term and retesting after changes to the villa network. What it provides is an honest, specific basis for trusting the backup at this particular property.

Bali expert view

The cheapest advertised price per gigabyte can become an expensive mistake when no one is on site to activate, renew or troubleshoot the connection. A dedicated Orbit modem may simplify device eligibility, yet its upfront cost and unknown post-promotion 5G tariff only make sense against measured service at the actual villa, especially if it often runs on 4G. The useful comparison is the year-long cost of a functioning second WAN, including switching, power and renewals, rather than the data-plan headline.
