How Can Bali Residents Plan a Reliable Vehicle Ferry to Java?
Published · Updated
Which ferry ticket and vehicle class do you need?
The distinction that matters at Gilimanuk is whether you are travelling on foot or bringing a vehicle aboard. Ferizy labels these options Pejalan Kaki and Kendaraan respectively. A foot-passenger booking will not carry a car across the Bali Strait. For a resident travelling from Bali to Java, the outward order begins at Gilimanuk and ends at Ketapang; returning to Bali reverses those ports and requires another ticket with its own date and port-entry window.
Ferizy groups vehicles by both their purpose and dimensions under the Indonesian term golongan. Class IVA covers passenger vehicles such as sedans, jeeps and minibuses up to and including five metres long. Class IVB covers goods vehicles of the same maximum length, including open- or closed-bed pickups and double-cab goods vehicles. A car carrying suitcases does not automatically become a goods vehicle. Equally, choosing the passenger category for a small commercial pickup solely because it has seats would be unsafe.
Consider a family in a sedan with two children and several bags, compared with a business owner driving a similarly sized delivery pickup. The family needs to account for every person in the booking, but its luggage does not by itself make the sedan IVB. The delivery vehicle must be described according to its actual classification, with cargo details where the booking requires them. Staff may inspect and measure the vehicle at the port, so the category selected online is subject to physical verification.
A vehicle ticket also involves a passenger manifest. Ferizy asks for details of everyone travelling, including identification and age information, as well as the registration number and vehicle particulars. Do not buy additional pedestrian tickets for the occupants merely because a separate foot-passenger tariff exists: any passenger-related charge should be counted only if it appears in the actual vehicle booking. Bring identity and vehicle-registration documents that match the submitted information. For a rental car, permission to leave Bali depends on the specific rental agreement; the crossing rules alone do not establish that every rental company allows or forbids the journey.
How much does a round trip really cost?
A useful price answer has to distinguish a published tariff from the total offered for a particular crossing. ASDP's official tariff announcement, effective 1 November 2024, listed IDR 225,000 for a class-IV passenger vehicle, IDR 192,200 for a class-IV goods vehicle, and IDR 11,100 for an adult foot passenger on the Ketapang → Gilimanuk route. These are dated, historical figures. They are not a verified October 2026 Ferizy checkout price, they do not establish every possible booking charge, and they should not simply be applied to the Gilimanuk → Ketapang direction without checking the order for that direction.
The distinction matters most when several people share the car. Ferizy separates pedestrian and vehicle-service tariffs and also requires all occupants to be recorded in the vehicle booking. Those two facts do not tell you to add an individual walk-on fare for each occupant to the quoted car price. The reliable unit of comparison is the completed vehicle order showing the car, the people and any charges actually displayed. Whether a particular screen breaks out passenger charges, administration or other services, its final total is the number to use once.
For a round trip, the booking records should be kept apart. The Bali-to-Java leg starts at Gilimanuk, with a Bali-local entry time, while the return begins at Ketapang, with a Java-local time. Different dates, vehicle details, passenger counts or available service categories may produce different totals. Record each direction, travel date, selected class and final amount in Indonesian rupiah (IDR), keeping the checkout breakdown and receipt where available.
To establish a live cost, use Ferizy's official booking service for one direction at a time. Select the departure and arrival ports, choose the vehicle user type and service, supply the physical vehicle type and length, then select the available port-entry date and time. Include the actual occupants and examine the amount before payment. Repeat the process with the ports reversed for the return trip. As of 19 October 2026, the public Ferizy screen did not yield a verifiable personal checkout total; a preliminary route-selection screen is not evidence of a priced order.
The rest of the travel budget belongs outside the ferry quote. Driving to western Bali, continuing across East Java, taking toll roads and parking all consume money that varies with the itinerary. An overnight stay might be a sensible contingency if the next morning involves a meeting or delivery; it is not part of the standard ferry charge. Queue length itself is not a billable fare, and there is no defensible conversion from a reported traffic jam to a universal cash cost for delays. Enter only amounts that apply to the journey being planned.
Do not calculate a current fare by applying an old promotional percentage. ASDP announced a 12–31 March 2026 stimulus covering specified passenger categories, including class IVA cars on regular Ketapang–Gilimanuk services in both directions. A separate programme ran 20 June–5 July 2026 during the school holiday period. ASDP's reported average 21.9% reduction in the total ferry ticket price concerned the relevant stimulus and its eligible services, not every vehicle booking in October. A promotion can disappear or exclude goods vehicles even when the underlying route is the same.
How do you book through Ferizy and complete check-in?
Ferizy is the intended route to a valid vehicle reservation before reaching either port. In a notice dated 23 March 2026, ASDP said tickets were no longer sold at the port and warned travellers against unofficial resellers. Under the published Ferizy terms, sales normally open as early as 60 days before the scheduled port-entry slot (H-60) and close one hour before it (J-1), although operating changes can alter that range. The one-hour booking cut-off is not a recommended arrival buffer, nor does it tell you when a particular vessel will sail.
The booking screen begins with Pelabuhan Asal, the departure port, and Pelabuhan Tujuan, the destination. The vehicle user type is Kendaraan, with service selection, vehicle class, vehicle type and length, passenger details and the scheduled port-entry or check-in time to follow. Gilimanuk is the origin for travel from Bali; Ketapang is the origin for travel back from Java. That distinction also changes the time zone on the ticket. Complete the manifest for all travellers using the identity details requested by the system, and enter a plate number that matches the vehicle registration document, normally known in Indonesia as the STNK.
An unfinished reservation can expire before it becomes a ticket. The standard Ferizy payment rule gives 30 minutes or the deadline shown on the order to complete payment; otherwise the order is cancelled and needs to be restarted. A paid ticket and receipt may be available through the account and email or another official delivery channel. Keep the booking accessible offline if mobile coverage is unreliable, and carry appropriate identification for the passengers plus the vehicle-registration record.
Check-in is a separate port procedure controlled by the actual interval printed on the e-ticket. Under Ferizy's general conditions, arriving before that interval means waiting in the designated area, while arriving after the permitted limit may require buying another ticket; the unused expired ticket can be forfeited. Following the identity and vehicle checks, ASDP issues a boarding pass, and its QR code is scanned during boarding. Cars then move according to the loading queue and staff directions. In other words, booking, check-in, boarding-pass validation, vehicle loading and reaching the exit of the other port occur in sequence, and the slot chosen online measures only one part of that sequence.
Vehicle discrepancies can stop the process even when the reservation was paid. ASDP is entitled to inspect dimensions and class, and a class correction may involve an official adjustment and additional charges before check-in. It is therefore better to resolve a borderline vehicle type with ASDP before leaving home.

What can disrupt the crossing despite a valid ticket?
The selected check-in time is a poor substitute for a promised arrival time. A driver approaching the ferry may first encounter controlled access to the port or a holding area, followed by ticket validation, waiting for a loading lane, boarding, the passage across the strait and the exit process on the other side. Only some of these stages are under the traveller's control. A valid ticket helps with admission to the formal process; it cannot reserve an exact place in a developing queue or compel the next ship to sail. Total driving-and-crossing time is consequently a different question from the duration of the passage on the water.
Planned closures are the clearest example. The Balinese Hindu day of silence, Nyepi, required a specific interruption in March 2026. ASDP announced a closure at Ketapang from 18 March, 17:00 WIB, to 20 March, 06:00 WIB, and at Gilimanuk from 19 March, 05:00 WITA, to 20 March, 06:00 WITA. Those are the published windows for 2026, not a forecast for the next Nyepi or standing annual hours.
The time-zone distinction needs particular care for international residents. Gilimanuk is in Bali's WITA, UTC+8; Ketapang uses western Indonesian time, WIB, UTC+7, because it is in East Java. The port clocks are an hour apart. A meeting on Java cannot be scheduled reliably by copying the clock time from a Bali booking and adding an assumed fixed sailing duration. The reverse journey creates the same problem in the other direction.
Weather interruptions are a different kind of event. In its report of 29 July 2026, ASDP explained that changing wind and wave conditions had forced situational stop-and-resume operations on Ketapang–Gilimanuk. Sailing may pause on the direction of the competent authorities and resume gradually when conditions permit. Neither a vessel name appearing during booking nor a paid port-entry window removes that discretion. A calm road journey to the terminal may end in a long wait if crossings have been suspended; a reopening can then release accumulated traffic only as capacity allows.
Congestion does not require a complete closure, either. ASDP recorded a queue towards Ketapang of about five kilometres on 24 June 2026, falling to around 2.5 kilometres by midday on 25 June. School-holiday travel, freight volumes and weather-related adjustments to loading were factors in that particular episode. These measurements belong to a dated event on the Java side. They are not a median wait, not an estimate of today's traffic and not a multiplier for converting kilometres into hours for a private car.
The family traveller and a commercial driver absorb these uncertainties differently. A late arrival may affect a hotel check-in for one and a delivery appointment for the other, while different vehicle types can also be managed through different holding and loading arrangements. The correct contingency therefore begins with the specific origin, vehicle class, date and downstream obligation. An appointment that cannot move should not be tied to the earliest conceivable ferry arrival.
Expectation and reality
A time selected in Ferizy is an exact vessel departure.
The booking specifies a port-entry/check-in slot; vessel assignment and loading may change.
TipDo not make an immediate onward connection depend on the selected slot.
A paid ticket will still work through Nyepi or bad weather.
ASDP announced Nyepi 2026 closures and weather-related operating pauses.
TipUse date- and port-specific notices, observing WIB/WITA.
A short crossing on the water makes arrival predictable.
Pre-boarding queues can be substantial; ASDP recorded kilometres of traffic near Ketapang in June 2026.
TipHistorical queue length is no typical wait-time estimate; leave a buffer or choose another day.
How can you change your travel date or recover from a disruption?
A changed travel plan creates two distinct questions: can the same booking move to another port-entry time, or should the traveller cancel it? Ferizy's general terms normally require requests for either voluntary change at least two hours before the scheduled port-entry time, while the ticket remains valid and has not been checked in or boarded. The published eligibility threshold is a ticket fare of at least IDR 50,000, excluding administration and additional service fees. That two-hour deadline is an application limit, not advice to arrive at the terminal two hours early. Crucially, Ferizy warns that rescheduling and refund facilities are not equally available on every route.
A reschedule is designed to change the date or hour for the existing journey. It does not switch the departure and arrival ports, the chosen service class or the vehicle category. The general fee is 10% of the eligible ticket price, plus any increase between the original and new fares, subject to availability. Ferizy also limits a booking code to one change. A traveller who bought the wrong direction or selected a goods-vehicle category incorrectly should not assume the date-change function will repair that mistake. The actual options displayed against the ticket and ASDP's response matter more than a generic description of the feature.
The published rule for a voluntary refund instead applies a 25% deduction to the ticket fare, outside the specified extra fees, subject to the conditions for a valid, unused ticket and supporting documents. Ferizy says processing can take up to 30 calendar days from submission of complete documents. That is relevant if the trip must be rebooked quickly and the traveller cannot rely on refunded cash arriving immediately. The same terms separately provide for a full refund, under ASDP's procedures, when a crossing does not take place for operational reasons classified as force majeure. A traveller choosing to cancel, a traveller missing check-in and passengers affected by an operator-imposed suspension should not all expect the same calculation.
Once the permitted check-in window has been missed, the general Ferizy rules treat the unused ticket as expired and require a new purchase; they do not promise a late reschedule or automatic compensation. If services stop because of an operational decision, the appropriate next move is to follow the official disruption notice and ask about the status of that specific booking. ASDP's official contact number is (021) 191, alongside the channels in the Ferizy account and port customer service.
If a meeting on Java cannot move, crossing on an earlier day and allowing for an overnight stay may protect it. A delivery can instead be planned around an agreed backup date with the recipient. The return ticket needs its own timing and contingency in WIB/WITA. Prepared documents and an appropriate check-in slot are within the traveller’s control; the time needed to clear a disrupted queue is not.
Bali expert view

The clock changes as soon as a vehicle crosses from Bali to East Java. Bali uses WITA, one hour ahead of the WIB zone at Ketapang. This became particularly visible in ASDP's separate port-closure schedules for Nyepi in March 2026. The windows published for the two ports cannot be compared as if both clocks ran in the same zone. A valid ticket confirms an intended port-entry process, not a reliable arrival hour for a delivery or an onward reservation. Building a real margin into the day of travel is more useful than trusting the apparent precision of the booking screen.
