Cambodia is building 18 ultra-fast EV charging stations

Event date

Cambodianess reported the rollout on September 16, citing Sun Chanthol, First Vice-Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia. The plan follows a Cambodian delegation's visit to BYD headquarters in Shenzhen, where officials reviewed the company's latest Flash Charging technology.

The rollout covers three major Cambodian hubs

Construction is reported in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Preah Sihanouk province, with 18 sites targeted for operation by year-end. The announcement does not provide a site-by-site list or say how many chargers will go to each location. That missing detail matters more to a driver than the national total because convenience will depend on where the stations actually sit along daily and intercity routes.

Cambodia already has a wider charging base. Cambodianess, citing data from the UnifyCharge app, reported 460 EV charging machines nationwide as of September 15 across public and private-partnership networks. The same report put the country's registered electric-vehicle fleet at 22,793 in August, including 16,926 cars.

The 10-minute claim is not a universal charging time

The Cambodia announcement describes the new system as capable of charging an EV in roughly 10 minutes. BYD's own specification for its second-generation battery and Flash Charging system is more precise: under the stated conditions, a compatible battery can go from 10% to 70% in about five minutes and reach 97% in about nine minutes.

Those figures depend on the vehicle, battery architecture and charging conditions. A car that cannot accept the station's high charging power will not automatically charge at the headline speed.

**Drivers still need the existing network until the stations open**

The useful milestone for residents will be the actual opening of the sites, along with confirmed locations and operating details. For now, the verified development is that construction has been reported in three areas and 18 stations are targeted for service by the end of 2026.

That gives EV owners a reason to expect faster options in Cambodia's main urban and tourism centres, but not yet a reason to plan a trip around these particular chargers. Until the new sites are commissioned, existing charging points remain the practical basis for route planning.
