Cambodia had 2,091 5G base stations by June 8, 2026

Event date

The June total was split almost evenly between Smart and cellcard, with 748 and 742 stations respectively, while Metfone had 601. TRC said all three operators were still accelerating deployment, so the published total does not represent a live nationwide count several months later.

Nearly 600 stations were added after the February checkpoint

TRC’s earlier February 12 update reported 1,494 5G base stations. By June 8, the total had risen by 597, an increase of roughly 40% in less than four months.

The growth was not evenly distributed. CamGSM moved from 289 stations in the February release to 742 in June. Smart increased from 674 to 748, while Viettel Cambodia rose from 531 to 601. For residents, that matters because one national number can hide large differences in each operator’s pace and footprint.

The regulator also said operators were using the rollout for both mobile access and 5G home broadband while continuing to improve 4G. Someone choosing a place to live or work therefore has more connectivity options than at the start of the year, but the useful question remains which network performs well at the actual address.

The footprint already extended well beyond Phnom Penh

Smart’s June list covered key areas in the capital and provincial centres across 20 provinces, including Siem Reap, Battambang, Kampot, Preah Sihanouk, Kep and Kandal. Viettel Cambodia’s list reached the capital plus provincial centres in 24 provinces, extending to places such as Pailin, Ratanak Kiri, Stung Treng and Pursat.

CamGSM’s published June geography was more concentrated: Phnom Penh together with Kandal, Kampong Speu, Siem Reap and Takeo. Even so, it recorded the largest increase in base-station numbers between the February and June regulator updates.

A province appearing in the TRC announcement does not mean it has wall-to-wall 5G coverage. The regulator described deployment in key areas and provincial capitals, and its annex identified specific locations and coverage areas available at the time.

A city-level 5G label is not enough for a housing decision

For a remote worker, entrepreneur or long-term resident, the rollout improves the odds of finding fast mobile connectivity outside the capital. It does not tell you whether a particular apartment has a stable indoor signal, how congested the network is at peak hours, or whether another operator performs better in the same building.

Before committing to a long lease, it is worth checking the operator’s coverage map for the exact location and testing the connection inside the unit. If work depends on video calls or large uploads, fixed broadband plus a separate mobile backup is a safer setup than relying on the national 5G station count alone.
