Cellcard said its Cambodia 5G network had grown beyond 500 base stations

Event date

The milestone is useful for residents and remote workers as evidence that another large mobile network was becoming more widely available. It is not, however, a city-wide guarantee of speed or indoor reception: the figures come from the operator and describe network deployment, not independent performance testing at individual addresses.

The 500-site figure marked a rapid expansion from January

Cellcard said it had doubled its 5G footprint since January and activated more than 500 base transceiver stations by late May. Light Reading reported the same milestone the following day, citing the company’s rollout announcement.

At the time, Cellcard estimated that its 5G signal reached about half of Phnom Penh’s population. It also highlighted deployment in Takhmao and Cambodia’s central region, along with indoor coverage at all three AEON malls in Phnom Penh and service in a range of offices, schools, hospitals and other busy locations.

For someone deciding where to live or work, the important limitation is that a population-coverage figure does not tell you whether a particular apartment has a strong indoor signal. Building materials, distance from a site, network load and the user’s device can all affect the experience.

Coverage has spread, but the July 1,000-site target remains unconfirmed

Cellcard’s current coverage checker, reviewed on 5 October, lists 5G areas in Phnom Penh, Kandal and Siem Reap. The page confirms that Takhmao remains within the operator’s listed 5G footprint, but it does not show which locations were added after 25 May.

The May release also set a target of more than 1,000 5G sites by the end of July 2026. That was a forward-looking company goal. In the Cellcard material and telecom trade coverage checked for this article, there was no separate announcement confirming that the 1,000-site threshold had actually been reached by the stated deadline. The verified milestone is therefore the 500-plus sites reported in May, while the later 1,000 figure should still be described as the operator’s target unless further confirmation is published.
