Thailand opens work-permit renewals for eligible Lao, Myanmar and Vietnamese workers

This is a defined worker group, not a general foreign-worker extension

The measure applies to workers from Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam who fall within the government scheme covered by the July 14 Cabinet decision and whose existing work authorization runs to December 11, 2026. It does not create a new registration route for workers outside that cohort.

That distinction matters for employers with a mixed foreign workforce. A nationality match alone is not enough to assume eligibility, and this process should not be treated as the renewal route for foreign executives, professional expatriates or other work-permit categories governed by different rules.

The filing window is now open

Applications through the e-WorkPermit system opened on September 8. An eligible worker may apply directly, or an employer or authorised labour-recruitment company may act on the worker's behalf under the applicable requirements. On December 11, the final day, applications are accepted until 4:30 p.m. and fee payments until 8:00 p.m. The government charges are 100 baht for the application and 900 baht for the work permit.

The process also includes worker-specific health requirements. The Department of Employment guidance calls for the required medical examination and evidence of health coverage, which may be Section 33 social security or qualifying health insurance where the worker is outside the social-security system or still waiting for coverage to take effect.

Some workers must separately complete passport or equivalent travel-document and immigration steps. The outer deadline stated for those procedures is June 30, 2027; where a passport is issued after August 1, 2026, the procedure is generally due within 90 days of issuance but no later than June 30. A work-permit renewal should therefore not be read as automatically completing every immigration requirement for the worker.

What employers should take from the change

For employers in construction, services, hospitality and other labour-intensive sectors, the immediate issue is continuity for existing staff after December. With the filing system now open, the useful check is employee by employee: confirm that the person belongs to this cohort, verify the current permit expiry date, and make sure the required health, insurance and identity documents match the route being used.

Workers who file within the permitted period and complete the required payment have documentation that can support continued work while the application is processed. Once the renewal is approved, the work authorisation can run through December 11, 2027, subject to the other conditions that apply to that worker.
