Remote work and legal status in Bali

Remote work describes how you earn, not a finished legal status. One person may have an overseas employer, clients in several countries, plans to live in Bali and interest in a local asset. Immigration, activity, tax and property do not become one question merely because everything happens through a laptop.

What should be checked first?

Do not look for the most convenient label. First describe the facts: whom you serve, who pays, whether there is an Indonesian company or local client, where you live, how long you stay and which asset you intend to use. Only then does a meaningful query to immigration, licensing and tax professionals emerge.

Short answer

Official immigration material distinguishes a visa from a stay permit, and a current service table names E33G as a category for remote workers. That is not personal permission and does not answer questions about employment activity, company, tax or property for you. Check the current official category against your facts and keep each topic on its own track.

Build an activity map without self-deception

A useful map fits on one sheet: employer or clients, contract country, place of service, currency and payment recipient, local partners, company role and intended Bali stay. It does not create a status, but it reveals the questions that cannot be hidden under the word “freelance”. If facts change, update the map rather than looking for an older label that sounds more convenient.

A visa and stay permit do not solve everything else

Official material distinguishes a visa as a basis for travel and a stay permit as permission to remain in Indonesia. Current service material includes an E33G category for remote workers, and visa classification was updated in 2025. This is a reason to check the current official route, not to treat an old group screenshot as a personal conclusion.

Do not turn personal work into a company answer

If an Indonesian company, an asset for receiving clients or a local operating process appears in the story, a new track is added. Describe it separately: contract party, service, address, payments and permissions. A remote contract cannot be assumed to explain local activity, and a business record cannot answer an immigration question.

Avoid short answers to a long situation

Caution is needed when someone promises to choose a status from one word, suggests hiding the real work model, mixes personal income with company money or says property purchase automatically resolves stay questions. Such phrases prove nothing. Pause, retain the facts and ask a professional about the facts that will appear in records.

Decision steps

  1. Record work facts

State clients or employer, contract country, role, payments, local connections and stay length without choosing a category first.

  2. Split the questions

Mark immigration, activity, tax and asset separately. For each, name the record and professional who reviews that particular track.

  3. Check the live immigration source

Before any action, check the current official category and ask about applicability to your facts rather than relying on an old screenshot or another person’s experience.

  4. Keep a documentary trail

Collect agreements, payment records, presence calendar and activity description; give each professional only what is relevant to their track.

What to check

0 / 4

Evidence
Agreements, service description and payment records.
Why it matters
The words “remote work” do not describe the actual model by themselves.
Evidence
Passport, immigration records and presence calendar.
Why it matters
Visa and stay permit differ and require current review.
Evidence
Description of role, address, agreements and money flow.
Why it matters
A local operating fact requires a separate licensing and documentary track.
Evidence
List of unknowns, professional question and review timing.
Why it matters
An unknown cannot be replaced with a convenient category.
Personal preparation notes, not confirmation of legal review.
