Living in Amed: What to Know Before Moving
Is living in Amed right for you?
Amed can feel remarkably easy when your plans involve a morning swim, a café and a quiet evening. A permanent base brings a different timetable. Grocery runs, school drop-offs, medical appointments and airport departures still have to work when the novelty of living by the sea has worn off.
People who dive often, work on a flexible schedule or simply want fewer urban distractions may find that exchange worthwhile. A couple whose work and social life do not depend on regular trips to the south can build a satisfying routine here. They are also more likely to enjoy the gaps between services instead of fighting them.
Other households need a tougher test. A child with a fixed school schedule, recurring specialist care or video meetings that cannot fail can turn a beautiful hillside rental into a logistical problem. Houses only a short distance apart may have very different access roads and connections. The useful question is whether a particular address supports the life you already lead, including the days when something goes wrong.
The Amed coast: choosing between its bays and hillsides
Searching for “Amed” accommodation can conceal how much coast you are actually choosing between. The name is used for a series of bays, slopes and settlements joined by a winding road. A walk that looks straightforward on a map may involve traffic, a climb or an unlit stretch after dinner. Place names are also used loosely in travel listings: the local government identifies Jemeluk–Amed with Desa Purwakerti in Abang district, which is a different matter from treating every tourist bay as an administrative village.
Around Amed Bay and parts of Purwakerti, it may be easier to put meals, a few shops and dive operators within walking distance. This is the sensible area to inspect first when you will not have a vehicle every day. Yet convenience attracts activity. Fishing boats may be prepared early, restaurants receive visitors and the lane behind a peaceful photograph may have its own rhythm. A room facing the beach deserves a noise check at both dawn and bedtime.
Jemeluk offers a compelling relationship with the water. Its snorkelling appeal is recognised by Indonesia’s tourism authority, and some homes look directly over the bay. That view can come with a staircase or a steep approach from the road. Picture carrying groceries and diving equipment uphill during a rain shower: suddenly the distance to the sea tells you very little about how easy the property is to live in.
Bunutan deserves a property-by-property look, especially where accommodation climbs above the shoreline. A secluded setting can mean fewer passing vehicles, but it may also mean a difficult driveway or extra travel for basic errands. At Lipah, the draw is often a beach-oriented routine and access to snorkelling. Individual homes still differ in the quality of the shore entry and in how far you must travel for the ingredients, medicine or services you use every week.
Farther along near Selang and Banyuning, the coast can feel more removed from the busier parts of the strip. That may be exactly what someone wants, provided an evening ride, a delivery and a medical journey remain workable. None of these labels settles the choice. The last section of road, the stairs, parking arrangements and neighbouring activity often matter more than the bay name on the listing.
Living by the water: diving, swimming and shoreline trade-offs
For someone who genuinely uses the sea most days, Amed offers something that a better-connected town cannot replicate. The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism highlights snorkelling and diving around Jemeluk Bay and Lipah Beach. Having those activities close to home is a meaningful lifestyle benefit, especially when diving is part of a weekly routine instead of an occasional excursion.
Shore access is more complicated than a map pin marked “beach”. Stretches of dark volcanic sand and pebbles give way to stones or reef, while traditional jukung fishing boats occupy parts of the shoreline. A property could be metres from the water but have no comfortable entry directly in front of it. An adult diver may be happy to walk to a suitable point; a family hoping for uncomplicated daily swims may reach a different conclusion.
Conditions are variable even where the water looked calm the previous afternoon. Boat movements, waves, currents and visibility all affect the decision to enter. Local operators can explain the usable entry points, while BMKG’s forecast for the northern Lombok Strait provides broader marine warnings. Neither a regional forecast nor a friendly-looking bay guarantees safe swimming at the time you arrive.
Tulamben, known for the USAT Liberty wreck, is a separate destination and should not be folded into claims about Amed’s own beaches. The InaRISK map can help screen larger natural hazards around a location, although it cannot certify that a particular home, path or swimming spot is safe. It is worth seeing your preferred stretch of coast under more than one set of conditions.
Renting in Amed: inspect the home, not just the sea view
The most expensive mistake in an Amed rental may have nothing to do with the monthly price. It can be a house that looks perfect at midday but becomes hard to reach after rain, holds damp air in the bedrooms or runs short of water when everyone needs a shower. Those are property conditions, not features that can be inferred from the district name.
A useful viewing starts inside. Open the taps, let the shower run and see whether water drains promptly. Inspect the ceiling, wardrobes and corners for leaks or lingering moisture; ventilation matters in rooms that stay closed for much of the day. Near the shore, salt can take a toll on hinges, outdoor fittings and air-conditioning equipment. A fresh coat of paint does not establish what is happening behind it.
Then follow the route a delivery driver would use. A hillside driveway may have a sharp bend or poor drainage, and a parking space that works for a scooter may be awkward for a car. The question becomes sharper at night or during heavy rain. Ask where the water comes from, what happens during supply interruptions and who maintains the drains. Confirm that rubbish collection and repairs are actually arranged, rather than assuming someone will appear when needed.
Noise has its own timetable. Construction next door may be quiet during your appointment, while fishing activity begins before breakfast. Electricity deserves equal attention: unstable supply can affect cooling, routers and the appliances needed for work. Find out whether there is any working backup, what it supports and who can be contacted if a fault happens when the owner is away.
Before transferring a deposit, establish who owns the property or has authority to rent it out. The agreement should identify the home, inventory, existing damage, meter readings, utility charges, deposit deductions and exit conditions. Photos taken during handover help avoid arguments later. Amed-wide rental averages tell little about a specific house; only current, comparable offers and the full contract reveal the real cost.
Getting around Amed and reaching the rest of Bali
There may be much less congestion than in southern Bali, yet journeys along Amed’s coast can still occupy a surprising part of the day. Homes, shops and meeting places are spread along a curving road with hillside sections. Darkness and wet weather change how comfortable that route feels, particularly for anyone carrying children, groceries or equipment.
Imagine an unremarkable Tuesday: collect a parcel, pick up something that the nearest shop does not stock and have dinner in another bay. Each errand is manageable; together they require several separate movements. A genuinely walkable address can make life without a scooter possible. Calling an entire bay “walkable” because one café is nearby is much less helpful.
App-based rides should be treated as an option to test, not a transport plan that is guaranteed to work as it might in Sanur. Availability depends on the exact pickup point and time. A known local driver is a practical fallback, especially for airport journeys, but the return trip, waiting time and luggage should be agreed in advance. Hiring a scooter does not solve matters for someone who is inexperienced on steep or winding roads.
An emergency exposes the weakness of an improvised system. If someone needs hospital care after dark, the household should already know who can drive, where to go and whether that route is realistic. The same planning applies to a flight from Ngurah Rai airport: start the estimate at the actual front door, account for the departure window and leave room for delays. One advertised travel time for “Amed” cannot safely stand in for that calculation.
Internet, power and shopping on a quieter coast
Remote workers can have excellent days in Amed and still discover that a particular rental cannot support their job. An impressive speed-test screenshot says little about dropped calls, unreliable uploads or a router that loses power during a local outage. Even the room you choose as a workspace makes a difference to wireless coverage.
The most revealing experiment is an ordinary work session in the proposed home. Join a video call at your normal meeting time, send a substantial file and repeat the exercise during busy evening hours. Learn which provider serves the property and whether the line is fixed or relies on mobile connectivity. A separate SIM from another network should be tested inside the house, not merely purchased as an optimistic backup.
Power resilience matters just as much. A fully charged laptop is of limited use if the router has shut down, and a small backup device may keep only part of the system running. Anyone who relies on uninterrupted client meetings needs to know how long the actual setup remains usable. If your trial call repeatedly fails, that is a concrete reason to keep looking before signing a long lease.
The second infrastructure test is less glamorous: try living with the local selection of shops and services. Medication, specialist groceries, pet supplies or replacement computer equipment might require a longer journey or an arranged delivery. Laundry, parcel collection and fuel availability also shape the week. A location can be wonderfully calm and still make simple errands take longer than expected; the difference only becomes obvious when you try your own shopping list.
Schools and healthcare: what is actually within reach
There is an educational option in Amed, which matters for families considering more than a holiday. Amed Honeycomb School lists programmes for children aged 3 to 16 and says that both international and Indonesian applicants are welcome. It is based in Purwakerti and describes a British-style learning programme. Those details come from the school itself: they do not establish whether the right year group has space, whether the teaching environment suits a particular child or what fees would apply to the family.
Admissions are only the first half of the school question. A daily drop-off and collection journey can dominate where a family chooses to live. A hillside home that works beautifully on a quiet Sunday may become tiring when the driveway is wet, school has a fixed start time and a parent must return for work. Discuss the child’s age, previous curriculum, language needs, timetable and any support requirements with the school before treating the location as settled.
Primary healthcare is available in the wider area. The Karangasem Health Office lists Puskesmas Abang II in Culik, with a service area that includes Purwakerti and Bunutan. Its directory describes general consultations and other basic services, and it publishes emergency-department hours. Some staffing and operating information is old, however, so those details cannot be treated as proof that a particular clinician or service will be available on the day it is needed.
RSUD Karangasem in Amlapura is a confirmed hospital destination on the regional map. A listing does not tell you whether a specialist is on duty, how quickly an ambulance or driver can reach your home, or which treatment your insurance will cover. People who need recurring medical attention should discuss the appropriate facility with their own clinician and confirm referral, transport and policy conditions before moving. This is general location information, not an individual medical assessment; serious symptoms require prompt local help.
Natural hazards deserve their own practical conversation. InaRISK can screen the wider area for hazards, but it is not a building inspection or an evacuation plan. A family needs to understand the route away from the shore if a tsunami warning is issued and whether everyone in the household could actually use it. That is part of judging an address, along with schools and healthcare.
Testing a longer stay before committing to a lease
A beautiful weekend is a poor rehearsal for signing a lease. A more useful trial means staying in two parts of the Amed coast, ideally one near the main bay and another farther along. Keep the days ordinary: work at your usual times, shop for meals, return after dark and find out what happens when a service is unavailable.
Different households will notice different friction. A remote professional may find that the evening upload fails despite a flawless morning call. Parents might discover that the school journey shapes every other plan. Someone who regularly needs medical care may decide that the hospital route is simply too demanding for a permanent base. These are valuable findings, even when the house and the sea are lovely.
The trial should also leave you with a credible driver arrangement, a workable medical route and clear rental terms before any substantial payment. If regular commitments remain in southern Bali, compare the daily cost in time with a base around Sanur or Denpasar. Those locations serve a different need; Amed does not have to win every comparison.
Immigration status and permission to undertake work or other activities are governed by Indonesian national rules, covered separately in the long-stay visa hub. Once those requirements and your insurance position are clear, the final choice is refreshingly specific: does this home, on this road, make the coming months easier or harder?

Living in Amed: practical questions
Is Amed a good place to live year-round?
Amed can be a good long-term base for people who actively want a quieter, sea-centred routine. It becomes harder when school runs, frequent specialist visits or commitments in southern Bali shape most weekdays. A week of diving does not reveal those pressures. Try living on your normal schedule before deciding that a holiday favourite should become home.
Which part of Amed is easiest for everyday living?
Start with Amed Bay if walking to a few shops, cafés and dive operators is a priority. Jemeluk may suit an ocean-focused routine, although hillside steps can affect daily comfort. Lipah and the more distant stretches require closer scrutiny of transport and errands. The useful comparison is between exact properties and the journeys you will make repeatedly.
Can you live in Amed without a scooter or car?
Some residents can manage without driving, especially near the main bay. The arrangement works best when everyday essentials are walkable and a local driver can handle longer trips. Ride-hailing coverage should be tested from the property, including the return journey after dark. A remote hillside rental becomes a much less practical choice without dependable transport.
Is Amed internet reliable enough for remote work?
Some homes can support remote work well; others struggle with long video calls or large uploads. A single speed-test result does not establish reliability at the hours you actually work. Run a real call, repeat it at peak time and test an independent mobile connection indoors. Ask what happens to the router and connection during a power cut.
Is there a school in Amed for international families?
Amed Honeycomb School in Purwakerti accepts enquiries from international families and lists programmes for ages three to sixteen. Admission depends on class availability and the individual student's needs. Parents should discuss year-group placement, language, tuition and support directly with the school. A practical school run matters as much as an offer of a place.
What medical care is available if you live in Amed?
Puskesmas Abang II is listed in Culik, and RSUD Karangasem is a hospital in Amlapura. They are important starting points, although published directories do not guarantee that a required clinician or treatment is available today. Confirm the right facility, a realistic transfer route and your insurance arrangements with the relevant providers. Urgent symptoms call for immediate local medical assistance.
How much time should you allow to get from Amed to Bali airport?
Allow time from your actual front door, not from a generic map marker for Amed. The route changes with your bay, departure hour, weather and traffic closer to the airport. Book a driver who has agreed to the pickup and luggage arrangements, particularly for early departures. Add a road buffer as well as the time required for check-in and security.
