Indonesia’s C1 Tourist Visa for an Extended Stay in Bali

C1 is an Indonesian single-entry visit visa for tourism: an initial stay of up to 60 days, with extensions bringing the total to a maximum of 180. It is not an automatic six-month grant or a work permit.

Who should consider C1 for a longer Bali trip

A four-month holiday in Bali needs more planning than the familiar 30-day arrival visa. C1 is worth considering for one continuous visit: the initial permission is up to 60 days, with further time available only through approved extensions.

Take a traveller who wants to spend 110 days exploring the island and has no Indonesian clients. C1 could suit that itinerary. Someone arriving to perform paid local assignments has a different immigration problem, even if both visitors rent the same villa.

Flights out and back change the calculation too. C1 allows a single entry; it is not a pass for frequent border crossings. This is an Indonesian visa category, with the same national restrictions in Bali as elsewhere in the country.

What Indonesia’s tourist visit status allows

A longer holiday remains a holiday. Sightseeing, visiting people you know and discovering Indonesia are within the purpose described for C1. Official guidance also covers attendance at certain meetings, exhibitions and related events, so a visitor does not necessarily have to avoid every professional gathering.

The distinction turns on what you actually do there. Sitting in the audience is different from taking a speaking engagement, marketing your services or delivering paid work to an Indonesian business. One immigration office’s C1 guidance expressly excludes acting as an event speaker. Even where attending or discussing business is mentioned, that should not be read as a general work authorisation.

Accommodation arrangements do not settle this question. A six-month villa lease is simply a housing contract; it does not turn a visit permission into residence or employment status. The same applies to registering at an address or travelling around the island for several months.

People combining leisure with occasional professional activities should examine those activities individually. The official descriptions are not perfectly uniform, and activities near the boundary between attending a meeting and providing a service deserve a category-specific answer before travel.

C1 versus B1 e-VOA: the differences that matter

Trip length is the first useful filter. For an eligible passport, B1 e-VOA covers up to 30 days at arrival and allows one further 30-day extension. That can work well for a five- or seven-week holiday, provided the extension is approved.

A visitor expecting to stay four months faces a different limit. C1 begins with up to 60 days and can reach 180 days in total through separate extensions. Those extra months are potential permissions, not time granted automatically with the visa. A short trip may not justify the more involved C1 application at all.

Neither option solves a schedule of repeated international trips. Once an entry has been used, leaving Indonesia does not preserve it for another arrival. D1 is a separate route for travellers whose actual need is multiple entry.

Finally, B1 is available only to qualifying nationalities. Eligibility is passport-specific, and a comparison of day counts should never be mistaken for confirmation that either visa can be issued to a particular traveller.

How to apply for C1 before flying to Bali

A C1 application can go wrong long before the traveller reaches Bali. The visa category must fit the proposed activities, and the person submitting the application needs the correct access to Indonesia’s official eVisa system. A document issued for tourism does not legitimise paid activity outside that purpose.

Sponsorship deserves particular attention because the published government guidance is inconsistent. The Jakarta Pusat immigration office describes C1 as sponsor-led, with an application made through the sponsor’s account. Bontang’s official C1 entry instead describes self-application for many travellers and reserves sponsorship for particular cases, including some nationalities and non-standard travel documents. The live application route for the specific passport is more useful than a general claim that everyone either needs or does not need a sponsor.

The published document set includes a passport valid for at least six months, bank statements covering the preceding three months with funds equivalent to at least US$2,000, and a recent colour photograph. A sponsor-based route adds the sponsor’s application and guarantee letter. Travellers using documents other than ordinary national passports may face additional return-entry evidence; nationality and document type can change the list.

Once the correct route is available, the applicant or sponsor submits the digital documents and confirms that names, passport numbers and the stated purpose agree. Payment is made against the official billing instructions. Keep the payment record and the visa received after approval, and verify its entry-validity dates before relying on an itinerary.

A commercial agent may prepare files or manage the application, but that fee is separate from Indonesian government charges. Nor can an agency make approval certain. The public guidance does not establish a safe processing-time promise for every nationality and case, so non-refundable travel commitments deserve care.

Documents and checks before C1 application or extension

Visa entry validity is not the same as length of stay

Two clocks start at different moments. The issued C1 visa has a 90-day window for entry under the official listing. Once the traveller actually enters Indonesia, the initial permitted stay is up to 60 days; it is not counted from the date the visa email arrives.

Imagine receiving approval about a month before the intended flight. That month uses part of the entry-validity period, but the first days of authorised stay are still ahead. Postpone the flight too far and the visa may expire unused, even though no time has yet been spent in Indonesia.

Arrival creates the more urgent deadline: the permitted-until date recorded by immigration. That is the date to track for a visit stay permit, commonly called ITK. A hotel checkout date, return ticket or personal day-count spreadsheet cannot override the official record.

The distinction is especially important for travellers planning 120 or 180 days. Future extensions are decided separately, so the earliest visa approval and the final possible exit date are never interchangeable.

Extending C1 in Bali: the application and office visit

The initial permission does not roll over when day 60 approaches. Extending a visit stay permit, or Izin Tinggal Kunjungan (ITK), is another immigration decision. Standard category-C visits can be extended in 60-day increments, subject to a total stay of no more than 180 days and approval at each stage.

The application starts through the account appropriate to the visa route. Immigration guidance calls for a valid travel document and a statement explaining the continuing visit; sponsorship evidence is relevant where a sponsor is used. The address entered in Bali matters because the responsible immigration office is tied to where the visitor is staying.

An online form should not be confused with an entirely remote extension. Under a policy effective 29 May 2025, immigration introduced in-person photographs and interviews for stay-permit extensions, including arrival-visa cases. Notices from the system or the assigned office determine the payment and appointment steps in an individual application. An interview may raise questions about what the traveller has actually been doing in Indonesia.

The Jakarta Pusat office’s published guidance describes an application window beginning 14 days before the current permit expires, with filing required before expiry. Treat that as an official reference to verify against the Bali office handling the case, not as permission to wait until the final day. Missing documents or a requested correction can complicate an already tight schedule.

After approval, the updated digital permit should show the new authorised end date. Retain that document and the payment evidence. A further extension is another application; neither previous approval nor submission of the next form guarantees a new 60-day period.

C1 journey from application to final permitted day

Match C1 to the travel purpose

Check for paid work or repeated entries, which need separate assessment.

Prepare documents and submit in eVisa

Establish the correct self-application or sponsor route, then prepare passport, financial evidence and photo.

Receive the visa and enter within validity

The entry-validity period is separate from the stay granted on arrival.

Record the first stay-permit expiry

Use the immigration expiry date, not a flight or lease date.

Apply for extensions before expiry

Check application status, payment and photo/interview instructions, subject to the authorised overall limit.

Leave or pursue a lawful status change

If the purpose changes, investigate an ITAS route separately; conversion is not guaranteed.

Government charges for C1 and its extensions

The Jakarta Pusat C1 listing, checked on 16 October 2026, states a government visa charge of IDR 1,000,000. This is an issuance fee. Any later extension of the visit stay permit is charged separately if the application is eligible.

The official fee pages are less straightforward on extensions. Jakarta Pusat’s ITK page lists IDR 2,000,000 for a 60-day extension. The Ngurah Rai immigration office in Bali publishes IDR 1,000,000 for a visit stay permit valid up to 60 days in its fee schedule under Government Regulation No. 45 of 2024. Those pages describe their services differently, so their figures should not be treated as an interchangeable quote for a C1 extension.

The live bill for the precise transaction is the figure to verify before payment. There may be a separate charge for the first and, if allowed, the second extension; a private service provider can also charge an additional handling fee. That commercial fee is not part of the state tariff.

For this reason, a fixed all-in six-month price would be misleading without the actual billing records and case details. Payment covers a procedure, not a promise that immigration will grant the requested stay.

Can you work while holding a tourist visit visa?

C1 has explicit limits on paid activity. The official conditions prohibit selling goods or services and receiving payment, wages or comparable compensation for work or business from individuals or companies in Indonesia. A freelance assignment for a local client falls outside what a tourism permission should be assumed to cover.

Remote employment creates a different question. It is tempting to read the prohibition on Indonesian-source compensation as permission for every kind of work paid from abroad. The published restriction does not establish that. The nature of the work, its frequency and the category under which the person enters still need consideration.

Someone on holiday might deal with a few unavoidable emails. Someone else may spend every weekday delivering services from a Bali rental. Calling both activities “remote” tells immigration very little about their actual purpose. A tourist visa cannot be marketed as a general digital-nomad work permit.

Travellers whose principal reason for staying is work should consider an immigration basis designed for that purpose before they arrive. E33G is one separate category relevant to some overseas remote workers, but eligibility and obligations require their own assessment; they cannot be inferred from possession of C1.

Leaving Indonesia or changing immigration status

Leaving Indonesia closes the entry that was made on C1. An unused portion of the possible six-month stay does not keep the single-entry visa alive for another flight to Bali. A fresh arrival needs a valid new immigration basis.

That can frustrate a traveller who intends to split several months between Indonesia and nearby countries. Their real requirement is repeated entry, not merely more days on one visit. D1 belongs in that conversation, but its conditions should not be imported into a C1 application.

Plans sometimes change after arrival. The official C1 description indicates that conversion from visit status to a limited stay permit, or ITAS, may be possible when the requirements are met, including applicable sponsorship conditions. The procedure is known as alih status. It is a separate immigration decision, not an automatic upgrade available simply because someone wants to remain longer.

For a straightforward four-month holiday, the priorities are valid extensions and departure within the approved period. Frequent international travellers need a different entry strategy. Anyone shifting to employment or residence should establish the proper legal basis before starting the new activity, even if a status-change application might later become possible.

C1 tourist visa: frequently asked questions

Does a C1 visa let you stay in Bali for 180 days straight?

Not on the initial permission. A standard C1 entry gives up to 60 days, with the authorised end date recorded by immigration. Reaching 180 days requires separate approved extensions. Booking accommodation for six months does not change the immigration permission.

How many times can a C1 stay permit be extended?

The usual 60-day C1 visit can be extended in two further 60-day stages, up to 180 days overall. The process extends the visit stay permit, known as ITK, not the already-used entry visa. Every application needs its own approval. The expiry on the issued permit remains the controlling date.

How is C1 different from Indonesia’s B1 e-VOA?

B1 e-VOA starts with up to 30 days and permits one extension, reaching a maximum of 60 days. C1 offers up to 60 days initially and potential extensions to 180. Both are single-entry tourism routes, not local work permits. B1 also has a separate nationality eligibility list.

Do you need a sponsor to apply for a C1 visa?

Government guidance is not entirely consistent. Jakarta Pusat presents C1 as a sponsor-led application, whereas Bontang describes self-application for many passport holders and sponsorship in specified circumstances. Use the current eVisa workflow for your nationality and travel document before paying anyone to act as a sponsor. If the actual application requires one, it must be addressed within that process.

Is an immigration office visit required for a C1 extension?

The policy introduced on 29 May 2025 requires photos and an interview at an immigration office for stay-permit extensions. Uploading the application online should therefore not be treated as a fully remote service. The assigned office and attendance instructions depend on the address and application notice. Follow current official directions if procedures change.

Can you work remotely while in Indonesia on a C1 visa?

A C1 visit does not authorise paid work for Indonesian clients. Being paid only by an overseas company raises a different question, and the published prohibition on local payment does not automatically answer it. The actual activities and immigration category must be assessed separately. E33G is one possible category to investigate for qualifying remote workers.

Can you re-enter Indonesia using the same C1 visa?

No. C1 allows one entry, and leaving Indonesia ends the ability to use that visa for another arrival. Unused days from an anticipated longer trip do not restore entry rights. A return requires another valid basis; travellers planning frequent crossings should look at D1 as a separate option.
