Indonesia B1 e-VOA for Bali: Entry and Extension
B1 is a single-entry Visa on Arrival for eligible passports: up to 30 days from entry, plus one extension for a total of up to 60 days. The extension begins online but published procedures also require a photo and interview at an immigration office.
When a B1 e-VOA Makes Sense for a Bali Trip
A pre-approved visa can make a Bali arrival easier, but it cannot turn a short-visit category into a three-month stay. For an 18-day holiday, B1 may be a sensible option if your passport is eligible. A 45-day itinerary depends on getting the single permitted extension. An 80-day plan needs a different visa decision before you travel.
B1 belongs to Indonesia's national immigration system. The same category is relevant beyond Bali; Ngurah Rai airport is simply one authorized arrival point. Where you are staying on the island becomes important later, when an extension is handled by the office responsible for your address.
Three labels do different jobs. Visa on Arrival (VoA) describes the entry route, e-VOA means arranging it electronically in advance, and B1 is the visa classification. The stay permit issued on entry — Izin Tinggal Kunjungan — records how long you may actually remain. That permission, not the convenience of applying online, governs the trip.
B1 Eligibility: Passport and Documents
Your nationality on the travel document is the starting point, even if you live elsewhere or hold a foreign residence permit. The official immigration list of nationalities eligible for Visa on Arrival was updated on 7 October 2026. Use the live list when you apply; a country's eligibility is not something to infer from a previous holiday or somebody else's passport.
The port of entry also matters. Bali's Ngurah Rai airport appears on Indonesia's published list of entry checkpoints for e-VOA holders. If your routing involves another Indonesian airport before Denpasar, it is the place where you first clear Indonesian immigration that needs checking. The rules do not extend automatically to every airport or ferry terminal.
For an ordinary national passport, the stated minimum is six months of remaining validity. An e-VOA is tied to the passport details submitted in the application. Renewing your passport between issuance and travel, or entering a digit incorrectly, can therefore create a problem that an airline counter cannot be assumed to solve.
The B1 document requirements include a recent colour photograph and a return or onward ticket. If you intend to stay beyond the initial allowance, the travel evidence still needs to make sense for that itinerary. Immigration may review it alongside the visa and the details of your visit.
Emergency and temporary passports do not follow exactly the same document rules. Official B1 guidance refers to at least 12 months' validity for such documents and excludes certain other forms of travel identification. Anyone travelling on something other than an ordinary national passport should confirm that precise document's acceptability before paying.
B1 Checks Before Applying and Extending
How to Apply for an e-VOA Before Flying
Indonesia's government eVisa portal is the place to arrange B1 before departure: evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Select the actual B1 category, not a product advertised loosely as a ‘Bali visa’. This visa does not require a sponsor for an eligible short visit. An agency may assist with the paperwork, but its service fee and promises are separate from the immigration decision.
The application is only as accurate as the passport information behind it. Enter the name, passport number, birth date and validity details exactly, then supply the passport biodata page, recent photograph and return or onward travel evidence requested by the system. A mismatch can surface at check-in or immigration; it should be resolved through official channels before the flight, not treated as a small typo that staff will necessarily overlook.
As of the 15 October 2026 source check, the published government fee for an initial B1 is IDR 500,000. The official electronic application supports card payment. Review the amount shown by the portal at checkout, because any third-party charge and Bali's provincial tourist levy are separate. Neither the published price nor a successful payment should be taken as a promise of instant issuance.
Once issued, download the e-VOA and retain the application reference and receipt. An offline copy is useful when mobile data is unavailable after landing. Read the visa's entry-validity dates carefully: they tell you when the document can be used, not how long the stay permit will authorize you to remain.
Arriving at Ngurah Rai: What to Check
At Ngurah Rai (DPS), have the passport used for the application and the issued e-VOA available, along with evidence of your onward journey. Being approved online does not remove the border officer's authority to ask about the purpose of the visit or decide whether to admit you. Airline and arrival checks can still involve the original travel documents.
Two other Bali-arrival requirements sit outside B1. All Indonesia is the separate arrival declaration used for immigration and other border formalities. Love Bali concerns the province's foreign-tourist levy; paying the visa fee does not settle that charge. Their detailed procedures are separate from deciding whether the B1 visa suits your trip.
The useful record to inspect after immigration is your individual permission to stay. Look for the authorized end date, not just the visa PDF's validity period. If the date appears inconsistent with the admission granted, seek clarification from the immigration authority promptly rather than assuming the flight booking sets your legal departure date.
Visa Validity Is Not the Length of Stay
The 90-day period printed for an issued e-VOA is the window in which you can use it to enter Indonesia. It runs from issuance. If you never travel during that period, the document does not remain available indefinitely; a fresh visa may be needed. It is not an entitlement to spend 90 days in Bali.
Arrival starts a separate clock. B1 initially grants up to 30 days in Indonesia, measured from the date of entry. One extension can add up to another 30 days, bringing the overall maximum to 60. That extension must actually be granted; eligibility to request it is not permission to remain longer automatically.
Hotel check-in dates are a poor way to calculate the immigration deadline. An overnight flight, an early-morning landing and a reservation for a certain number of nights do not override the end date on the stay permit. The individual immigration record is the reference to use when choosing your return flight and deciding when to begin an extension.
B1 is also single-entry. Leaving Indonesia does not leave an unused second arrival on the same visa, even when its original 90-day entry window has not fully elapsed. A later return needs its own valid entry basis.
Four B1 e-VOA Misconceptions
Extending a B1 e-VOA in Bali
An extension is a workable route for someone who wants to turn a short Bali break into roughly six weeks. It does take planning. Starting a form before the first 30 days expire is only part of the job, and a departure flight booked against an assumed new date can create trouble if the application has not yet been approved.
The government eVisa account is the starting point. Depending on how the original permission was issued, you may first need to use Claim Stay Permit to link it to the account. The extension form then asks for the relevant passport and travel documents. Ngurah Rai's published guidance specifically refers to a valid passport and a colour scan of the return or onward ticket.
Your accommodation details are operational information, not a formality. The postal code entered for where you are staying helps determine which immigration office has jurisdiction over the case. Travelers moving between Canggu, Ubud and other areas should use accurate, current details rather than copying an old booking. The Ngurah Rai office is not automatically the right appointment location for everybody staying on Bali.
The Ngurah Rai office published a fee of IDR 500,000 per VoA extension application at the 15 October 2026 check. The bill generated for your own application remains the amount to verify before paying. Keep proof of payment, then monitor both email and the online account for the next instruction. A payment receipt shows the financial step was completed; it does not certify that additional days have been granted.
There is a real distinction between submitting online and extending entirely online. The official visa information describes an electronic route, but an immigration circular effective 29 May 2025 introduced an in-person photograph and interview for stay extensions, including VoA. Ngurah Rai's current local instructions also direct applicants to attend the office after the online stage. The appointment notice should guide the visit.
Published local timing advice is not phrased consistently, and there is no safe nationwide promise that every application has the same filing window or appointment deadline. Use the dates offered in the live portal and the notice issued for your case, while leaving room in your travel plans. Only the updated stay permit, with its new expiry date, settles how long you are allowed to remain.
B1 Extension: From Online Form to Immigration Visit
Check the actual stay end date; prepare passport, onward ticket and address with postal code.
Claim the existing stay permit if needed and complete the B1 extension application.
Keep the receipt and watch email or portal messages for the appointment.
Use the office associated with the declared accommodation; follow the timing in your notice.
Verify the new permitted end date; payment alone is not approval.
What the B1 Status Does Not Permit
A B1 holder is not limited to sitting on a beach. Indonesia's published category covers tourism, family visits, certain meetings, conventions, exhibitions and transit. Attending an event or meeting someone to discuss a possible project can fit the purpose of a short visit.
The boundary is crossed when a visit becomes local paid activity. B1 does not independently authorize employment in Indonesia, selling goods or services locally, or receiving pay for work from Indonesian people or companies. Listening to a proposal at a meeting is materially different from taking a paid assignment from the same business and carrying it out while in Bali.
Remote work needs more care than the familiar claim that foreign clients make every laptop-based job legal. The published B1 rules do not offer a blanket exemption for online income. The actual work, contractual relationship and payment source can change the appropriate visa analysis; seek immigration advice for activities that go beyond a genuine visit.
An extension changes the permitted length of the stay, not the nature of the permission. Remaining for another few weeks under B1 does not add work rights that were absent on arrival.
When B1 Is the Wrong Visa
Some passport holders can enter Indonesia under the A1 visa-free arrangement for a brief visit. That may look similar to B1 at first, but the extension rights are not interchangeable. A1 allows up to 30 days and cannot ordinarily be extended. Choosing the entry basis matters if there is even a reasonable chance the trip will run longer.
Someone planning 45 days can consider B1, provided they allow for its single extension and the immigration appointment. At 70 or 80 days, the 60-day B1 ceiling is already a problem before departure. The longer-stay C1 tourist category deserves a separate look at that point, including its own eligibility, documents, fees and extension arrangements. A B1 approval does not establish eligibility for C1.
Another potential source of confusion is the bridging mechanism mentioned in updated official B1 guidance. Its existence means that an absolute claim that B1 can never lead to another status is too broad. It does not mean every visitor can switch visas on demand, or that a conversion will be completed before their current permission expires. Any proposed change needs case-specific confirmation.
An expired stay permit belongs to a different situation altogether. It should not be handled as though an overdue B1 extension were a routine administrative catch-up.
Nationality, the purpose of the visit and the rules in force when you apply can change the answer. This is general guidance based on the official sources checked on 15 October 2026, not an individualized immigration determination. For a complex travel document, employment plan or status change, verify the route with Indonesian immigration or a qualified adviser before relying on it.
B1 e-VOA Questions and Answers
How long can I stay in Bali on a B1 e-VOA?
B1 initially permits up to 30 days from arrival in Indonesia. There is one possible extension, bringing the total stay to no more than 60 days if approved. Your own stay permit specifies the actual last permitted date, which is the one to use for travel plans.
Does the B1 30-day stay start when I pay or when I enter Indonesia?
Payment does not start the 30-day stay. That period begins when you enter Indonesia, while the issued e-VOA has a separate 90-day window in which it may be used for entry. After arrival, the immigration stay-permit date matters more than the receipt or the date you downloaded the visa.
Can I extend a B1 e-VOA entirely online?
You can submit the extension application and documents through the eVisa system. Published procedures effective from 29 May 2025 also require an in-person photograph and interview, including for VoA holders. Follow the appointment notice and the office responsible for the address you supplied; an online payment is not the finished extension.
Do I need an onward ticket to apply for a B1 e-VOA?
A return or onward ticket is listed among the official B1 documents. It should be consistent with your proposed journey, especially if you intend to request extra days. Holding a flight reservation neither replaces a stay permit nor guarantees that an extension will be approved.
Does the B1 visa allow paid work in Bali?
B1 does not by itself permit paid employment in Indonesia or paid services to Indonesian clients. Attending a meeting is different from performing work under a local contract. Even when the employer is abroad, remote work is not automatically cleared by the words 'tourist visa'; the activity needs its own immigration assessment.
Should I choose B1 or C1 for a stay longer than 60 days?
A B1 visa cannot cover more than 60 days through its standard single extension. For a longer holiday, examine the current C1 tourist route before booking around an assumed visa outcome. Its application criteria, permitted stay and extension rules are separate from B1, so the better choice depends on your passport and itinerary.
Can I get a B1 visa on arrival at the airport instead?
Eligible travelers can also request a non-electronic Visa on Arrival at an authorized checkpoint, including Ngurah Rai. That option involves payment and processing on arrival; e-VOA moves the application stage ahead of the flight. Both are B1 routes, and neither guarantees admission or a different length of stay.
