How to Prepare for Moving to Bali in 1–3 Months
Quick — 10-second read
- In short
- Resolve the immigration route, essential paperwork, health cover and access to funds before you fly. A long lease can wait until you have seen the property and tested the area.
- Who it matters to
- People planning an extended stay, a family relocation or a trial period before committing to Bali.
- Next step
- Today, match your nationality, intended activities and departure date to the current official visa conditions.
This is a practical orientation, not legal, tax or investment advice.
Where to Start When Planning a Bali Move 1–3 Months Ahead
Six weeks before your flight, a landlord asks for a substantial deposit on a twelve-month villa. Meanwhile, your permission to stay has not been settled. The deposit feels like progress, yet it may be the one decision that is hardest to reverse.
Build your moving plan around what could stop the trip: an immigration category that genuinely covers your intended stay and activities, documents for everyone travelling, medical protection from arrival and access to funds. Accommodation comes next. A short, flexible booking gives you a real address without forcing you to choose a neighbourhood from photographs.
With ten or twelve weeks to spare, you can approach applications, school enquiries and insurance comparisons in a measured way. A four-week departure calls for a narrower agenda, not shortcuts on eligibility or healthcare. Leave the scooter, furniture and permanent rental for later. The one-to-three-month timeline here is a practical organising tool; it is not an Indonesian visa-processing promise.

Two to Three Months Out: Match Your Plans to the Right Immigration Route
A scouting visit, a family relocation and a job-based move may all begin with a flight to Denpasar. They are not interchangeable immigration purposes. Indonesia has distinct routes for visits, employment, education, family circumstances and longer-term residence, each with its own conditions.
Start with the activity you intend to carry out, then work out the length of stay and the people who will accompany you. A couple travelling to explore neighbourhoods has a different set of questions from a parent enrolling a child in school. Someone keeping an overseas job needs to establish whether the proposed activities are actually permitted under the relevant category. Receiving payment abroad does not, by itself, turn a visitor visa into work authorisation.
The official Immigration category index is a useful map, but the individual visa information is where the decision happens. Read the current eVisa terms for your passport, documents, sponsorship requirements, permitted activities and application process. Entry permission, an allowed period of stay and permission to work are separate matters. Certain circumstances call for a limited stay permit, known as ITAS; do not assume a visitor arrangement can always be converted after arrival.
Dependants deserve their own review. A parent may meet the conditions for a route that requires additional evidence for a spouse or child. School admission, custody arrangements or an employer's paperwork can set the pace even when the principal applicant is ready. Anyone relying on a sponsor should know who that sponsor is and what they must submit before committing to travel dates.
Allow time for an unexpected answer. You may discover that your intended activity needs another category, or that required supporting evidence will not be available before departure. The two-to-three-month stage is a planning priority, never a guaranteed government turnaround time. Check the live official conditions when applying, especially before buying a non-refundable ticket.
Documents to Prepare Before You Fly to Indonesia
The document problem is rarely the one you planned for. A name is spelled differently on a booking, a passport has insufficient remaining validity for the chosen route, or an application asks for evidence that is still with a school or employer. A generic relocation checklist cannot settle those category-specific requirements.
Treat each traveller as a separate file. Passport details should match tickets and visa applications exactly. The selected immigration route determines which financial, sponsorship or other supporting documents are needed and which passport-validity conditions apply. Add accessible copies of your approved visa or application records, itinerary, first accommodation, insurance and emergency contacts for the journey itself.
Families may need a longer lead time than solo travellers. A school can have its own admissions records, academic reports and vaccination-information requirements; these are not universal immigration rules. Birth certificates, custody evidence and parental consent matter in some circumstances, while translation or certification rules depend on the receiving authority and the country of issue. Request the actual list before spending money on blanket notarisation.
Imagine losing your phone while changing flights. Could you still show an essential confirmation or reach the person managing your arrival? Keep secure digital copies plus an offline set accessible from another device or trusted location. Carry originals where an authority or institution requires them. A saved PDF is a useful fallback, not a substitute for an original when one is specifically required.
Four to Six Weeks Out: Book a Flexible First Stay
An annual villa deal can look attractive when the photos are excellent and the agent says another tenant is waiting. The catch is that a listing cannot tell you whether the street floods after heavy rain, whether construction starts at dawn or whether the internet can sustain a working day. A cancellable first stay buys you time to find out.
Neighbourhood names are only a starting point. In Canggu and Berawa, the crucial detail may be the road between home and the place you expect to visit every morning. Sanur can suit a routine concentrated along its coastal area, but the exact address still changes the journey. Ubud and Penestanan may offer a greener setting with access roads that feel very different in person. Homes on the Bukit peninsula can leave you relying on longer drives for errands, school or healthcare. None of these areas is automatically the right answer for everyone.
Think about an ordinary Tuesday, not a holiday afternoon. A family with school runs needs a different base from someone whose main requirement is uninterrupted video calls. Workable desk space, quiet hours and access by car can matter more than the pool. Even two properties within the same named area may produce completely different daily routines.
Before paying, get the address, cancellation rights, deposit rules and included utilities in writing. Ask what connection is provided and whether nearby building work is ongoing. An attractive monthly figure may omit electricity, cleaning or other charges, so the payment terms deserve as much attention as the property itself.
Use the temporary booking to inspect long-term options after arrival. You can test the water, humidity, noise and roads, then read the proposed lease with a clearer idea of what you are accepting. Keeping the first booking flexible is a deliberate relocation choice, not evidence of poor planning.
Health Cover, Medication and Family Arrangements
An insurance policy activated several days after landing does little for an emergency on day one. That is why the start date and claims procedure deserve attention before departure. A polished promise of “comprehensive” cover tells you much less than the terms you would rely on if you needed hospital treatment.
Look at inpatient limits, deductibles, emergency transport or evacuation, exclusions for pre-existing conditions and any requirements for authorising care. Scooters and planned activities can introduce limitations that are easy to miss in the marketing summary. Save the assistance contact and learn whether you are expected to pay first or have treatment arranged through the insurer. The answer comes from the actual contract, not a category name.
Children add practical questions beyond travel insurance. A school's application schedule and its requested records may affect where the family should live initially. Healthcare access should be considered alongside the likely daily journey. If anyone relies on ongoing treatment, arrange a discussion with their clinician before leaving and identify what medical information will be useful abroad.
Medicines deserve their own check. Having a prescription is sensible but does not automatically mean that every product or quantity can be brought into Indonesia. Import conditions must be checked for the particular medicine; treatment choices belong with a qualified clinician. These limits matter most when a family cannot afford an interruption in care.
Money and Connectivity: Build in Backups Before Departure
You may have a perfectly healthy bank account at home and still struggle to pay for an airport transfer abroad. Card controls, international transaction limits and one-time security codes can all change the experience. Losing the phone that receives account-verification messages is particularly awkward when that phone is also your only navigation tool.
Test two independent ways to access funds and understand the bank's recovery procedure before you leave. If your home number handles essential messages, find out how it will function overseas and what happens if the SIM is lost. Changing phones or reinstalling banking apps on arrival can trigger fresh verification, so arrange fallback access while you still have familiar connectivity. An overseas income stream is little use if you cannot enter the account that receives it.
Separate starting commitments from ordinary living costs. The initial accommodation, potential deposit, emergency healthcare costs and a change of itinerary can require money at short notice. Your reserve should reflect those commitments and the reliability of your access to transfers. A generic Bali monthly budget will not tell you whether you can handle a disrupted arrival.
Offline maps and saved contact details are worth setting up even if you plan to obtain a local data package quickly. Opening an Indonesian bank account is a separate eligibility question, with requirements set by individual providers and your status. Plan the first weeks so that neither a local account nor uninterrupted mobile data is essential to getting settled.
The Final Week: Arrival Declaration and Bali Tourist Levy
A final-week review is about consistency. Passport details must agree with the ticket and visa records, and your route must still cover the purpose of travel. Airline documentation checks can reveal an issue before you even board, so this is not the time to rely on a vague promise that paperwork will be fixed on arrival.
Indonesia's All Indonesia form brings immigration, customs, health and quarantine arrival information into one declaration. International travellers must submit the arrival card within the three days before arrival through the official channel; submission is free. Keep the resulting confirmation available offline. Completing this declaration does not grant entry permission or replace the visa appropriate to your trip.
Bali also has a provincial foreign-tourist levy, administered through Love Bali. The question is whether you are a qualifying tourist, not simply whether you hold a foreign passport. The official exemption list includes certain residence and visa holders, including KITAS holders. Some categories require an exemption application in the Love Bali system, while others rely on showing the relevant proof. Travellers who must pay are encouraged to do so before departure and keep their voucher.
The two processes serve different purposes and are managed by different authorities. An arrival card is a national border form; the Bali levy is a regional tourism requirement. Neither changes what your immigration status allows. Revisit the official pages close to departure because procedures and exemptions can change.
What to Handle After Landing Rather Than Paying for Upfront
The first day has a fairly modest job: reach the confirmed address safely, let someone know you have arrived and get a reliable connection. There is no advantage in choosing a permanent home while tired from a flight. A transport arrangement and the first booking's contact details are far more useful than a rushed scooter purchase.
Phones purchased outside Indonesia deserve a little forethought. A device using its overseas SIM on roaming does not normally need Indonesian Customs IMEI registration. For foreign tourists using an Indonesian SIM during stays of up to 90 days, Customs describes registration through a mobile operator. Longer use can involve a different Customs procedure. If your phone is essential for work, understand which route applies before arrival; not every imported handset needs registration at the airport.
The most revealing neighbourhood visit is the ordinary journey you would repeat every week. Try the road at school or work time, notice construction noise and see whether a car can reach the property easily. Indoors, test the water pressure, signs of damp, air conditioning and the actual Wi-Fi connection. A listing viewed from another country cannot reliably answer those questions.
Longer-term housing discussions can then be based on evidence. Find out who is entitled to let the property, what the deposit secures, which bills are included and how a dispute or early departure would be handled. Written terms and a personal inspection are worth more than an assurance in a chat. The purpose of a temporary base is to give you room to say no.
Plenty can wait until you land: a favourite neighbourhood, regular transport, a permanent lease and a preferred local mobile package. Immigration compliance, appropriate cover from arrival and emergency payment access are different. Those preparations belong on the departure side of the journey.

Which Tasks Matter Most for Your Move?
Use the visit to experience commutes, noise and daily routines before accepting a long lease.
Get the chosen school’s requirements early, and select temporary housing around realistic journeys.
An overseas employer does not automatically make visitor permission suitable; protect bank and work-account access.
Prioritise eligibility, documents, insurance, funds and the first booking. Furniture and a long lease can wait.
